FA Cup romance

Recommended Posts

Dave suggests that when we beat Margate, Horsham or Team Bath would be just reward in the 1st round proper.

This is hot from the Reuters wire

Talk about the romance of the FA Cup!

Team Bath, the first student team to play in the FA Cup for 122 years, will have to get past Horsham to get to the first round proper after being paired with the Sussex side in Monday's fourth qualifying round draw.

Bath defeated Newport County 3-0 in the third qualifying round on Saturday to extend their dream run in the world's oldest club competition.

No student team has played in the FA Cup since Oxford University and Cambridge University took part in the 1879-80 season.

Oxford University won the FA Cup in its third season in 1874 but, after losing the 1880 final to Clapham Rovers, never played in the competition again.

This year's students, from the University of Bath, have now won their first four matches in the competition, scoring 16 goals and conceding just two.

However, they face a tough task away to Horsham, who play in Division One South of the Ryman League, effectively a division higher than Bath's Western League premier division.

Victory on October 26 would give Team Bath a chance of facing Football League opposition.

``This is an extremely tough draw for us, but we're at the stage where any team we get would be,'' said Bath manager Ged Roddy on Monday.

``Clearly we're going to be underdogs again and we'll have to be at the top of our game to get a result from the match.

``But we're on a roll now. We're playing some great football, we've got absolutely nothing to lose and we're certainly looking forward to the match.

``It's magnificent that we're the first university team to play in such a prestigious competition for more than 100 years, but to have put together such a good Cup run is a dream come true.

``The players can be proud about what they've achieved to get us this far. It's been a great thrill for everyone involved with the club, and we can't wait for the match against Horsham.''

Just in case the students fail, the western English city could still be represented in the first round as Bath City take on neighbours Yeovil Town in another fourth qualifying round tie.

Great result on Sunday, keep up the good work lads.

Regards to the Halfway Liners!

Well said Margate Man.

PS - Can JJ of the Margate FC Exiles Club give Geoffrey Pay of Dartford a great, big sloppy kiss from Akpo's Mum, please? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/yelrotflmao.gif" alt="" />
