Brief match report from last night:

"Slough reserves picked up a useful win against a Hitchin side containing five first team players on Monday night in the Capital League Cup. A scratch Rebels side containing just twelve players lined up against a former Rebel in Leon Townley, now plying his trade with Hitchin Town.

Goals from brothers Johnny and Leigh Mason set the Rebels up for the 2-0 victory in the cup they won three seasons ago, beating Stevenage 7-0 in the final. Both Michael Parkin and Ian Lovegrove had particularly good games following disappointing showings in the FA Trophy the previous day, although everybody in the team worked hard for one another and all put in excellent performances. Parkin in particular recaptured the form which thrust him into the number one shirt towards the back end of last season with a commanding display in goal and on a number of occasions, the 19 year olds alert goalkeeping prevented the home side from getting back into the match.

Slough took the lead late in the first half through Johnny Mason with an individual effort as he beat two players and past the outcoming keeper, following a similar move minutes earlier which saw him strike the upright with his shot past the home sides keeper.

Slough's second goal came late on in the match as they’d been reduced to 9 fit players on the pitch after a series of injuries with Lovegrove, Kwiatkowski and Kassim both picking up knocks and only Leigh Mason available to come off the bench. With the reduction in fit personnel, the home side were able to push forwards much more but resilient defending from the Rebels held Hitchin at bay. Slough’s second came through Leigh Mason as following some intensive Hitchin pressure, a clearance from the back found two Slough players unmarked onside in the Hitchin half and Mason was able to run through and round the keeper to seal a superb win for the inexperienced away side.

The next round sees the club travel to Gravesend & Northfleet.

MOTM: Although unfair to single out a particular player, Michael Parkin demonstrated a real return to the high standard of goalkeeping he set himself towards the back end of last season with a commanding performance."

No wonder we beat a relatively strong Hitchin side with an extra man. Amazingly poor refereeing not to notice and very sporting of their players not to say anything. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
