No doubt some AFC fans will find their way onto here soon.

They should use this forum for genuine discussion about football related matters, and the "general" forum for anything else.

WE MIGHT B LOWER LEAGUE AND ALL THAT,BUT THE ONLY REASON WE R IN THE LOWER LEAGUE IS COS OF FINANCE AND GROUND STANDARDS,SO WE SHOULD BE IN ATLEAST THE RYMAN 1ST ANYWAY,WE'VE HELD OUR OWN QUITE EASILY ON OCCASIONS AGAINST RYMAN 1ST TEAMS,NOTIBLEY SAT AGAINST WALTON,AND IN THE VASE LAST SEASON AGAINST LEWES AND GREAT WAKERING SO ITS SHOULD BE A GREAT GAME WEN U VISIT THE KINGS MARSH AND IM SURE YOU WONT FIND IT AN EASY TASK,AND NOR WILL WE.I NOTICE YOU HAVE A FEW PLAYERS WITH EXPERIANCE OF PLAYING WITH TEAMS FROM LUTON,PLYMOUTH,BIRMINGHAM ETC SO THAT WILL HELP YOUR CAUSE BUT ITS HOW THEY PLAY ON THE DAY I GUESS.WE DONT CONCEDE MANY GOALS BUT WE ATTACK LIKE WILD DOGS SO ME PERSONALLY CANT WAIT FOR THE GAME.SO ENJOY THE DAY AND HOPE YA STAY WITH US IS VERY ENJOYABLE EXCEPT THE RESULT THAT IS(HOPEFULLY)

LOOK 4 WARD 2 A BIT OF BANTER 2!

Now it is possible that I'm wrong on this but there was an interesting small item in the NLP a couple of weeks ago about a player called Devereux who wanted to sign for Long Melford F.C. No, that's not the strange part.

The player was under contract with another club. They wanted a transfer fee of £2500. Mr Devereux was so keen to [either or both] leave his current club and join mighty Long Melford F.C. that he was going to pay the £2500 himself!

Now that is strange. There was no follow-up to the story the following week.

It's just occurred to me that the club that he wanted to leave might have been AFC Sudbury.

If any of their lot come on here, perhaps they can confirm and enlighten us.

Most people who know me know that I'm not really an expert on anything. However, Sudbury could be one of my chosen specialised subjects, as my other half is from Glemsford (4 miles or so up the road from King's Marsh - Sudbury's ground) and her old man is a season-ticket holder there. Coincidence indeed. Don't be fooled by the Jewson Eastern Counties League status. They're a strong team - not sure why they didn't apply for promotion last year. Their manager is (or was last season) a tattooed type called Keith Martin whose tactical nous at last year's FA Vase semi-final seemed to consist of swearing randomly at his players throughout the match (I was standing behind him for the whole of the second leg - he started early, shouting "Devereux, you are a c@nt" at one of his players after he mis-controlled his first touch of the game).

Sudbury is a very nice little town - Greene King IPA country, as I understand it. Seasoned EFM watchers will be interested to know that Long Melford, the new home of... oooh... somebody or other, is about a mile and a half from their ground. Has lots of antique shops. Average crowds are indeed in the region of 350, but I'd be expecting a bigger crowd. The impression that I've had of Sudbury is that they'll be more than up for giving a Ryman League team a bloody nose. They got to the first round of the cup last year, by the way, and lost 6-1 to Darlington. Kate, my other half, still has a yellow & blue parrot from their FA Vase Final appearance many years ago.

The ground is small and a fair walk from the town - the pitch, last season at least, was dreadful, which might be a problem (what with us being used to the lush green-ness of The Park and all). The local nightclub - Easterns - would, I'd have to say, draw unfavourable comparisons with the Adelaide.

There's no easy draws in this round of the cup, but I'd say that we'd beat them if we get a replay. Just don't be fooled by the league they're in.

Well whatever is said by others on here, I would like wish you a warm welcome to AFC Sudbury. There has not been any trouble at the ground in the 4 seasons ive been attending. Last saturday AFC & Walton fans stood together in the stand and both cheered and gave some verbals to the other team (without any trouble)

Id just like to make one comment about a previous post. The pitch is in good condition (as it was last season) It is one of the best in the lower leagues and if you come to play football you will find the pitch to your liking.

I'm sure both clubs would like to see a good game of football that will bring credit to them and the leagues they represent. All I ask for is a referee that knows his stuff and is not out to be the centre of attraction and ruin the game for both teams.

This is a cup game, AFC will be the underdogs, but sometimes the FA Cup is about surprises, I of course hope we manage to pull off another surprise and see us into the next road.

Well done so far in the League, I hope you continue to do well. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />

I think we spent the earnings from last year's FA Cup run on pitch drainage, so yes it is a lot better than it was.

Re. the Devereux story: I'm no expert but it was indeed Brian D who paid his own transfer fee to go from AFC to Long Melford (one division lower but quite ambitious). Must have been a personality clash involved somewhere. He dropped out of football for a while last season (not sure why) and although he's one of the best goalscorers we've had I think we've closed the gap behind him quite well. We now have goals coming not just from the forwards (including 50-goals-a-season man Sam Banya) but from all over the team. We have an away game against top-3 Stowmarket Town tomorrow (Wednesday) - look out for the result as it should be a good barometer of how ready the team is. Great Yarmouth Town away on Saturday should be an walkover for us, but is certainly a potential banana skin.

Tatooed manager Keith Martin is a local hero, self-made millionaire and so on, club Chairman too. Doubtless his management style won't suit everyone but our success with him in charge speaks for itself.

Someone earlier mentioned the antique shops round our way: this is Lovejoy country, so anyone wanting to relive their favourite Ian MacShane moment can do so in Long Melford High Street. It'd be a fairly sad act if you did though.
