FA CUP DRAW !!!

Laz

Recommended Posts

Conquerors of mighty Walton & Hersham at home on Saturday, 2-0, riding high in the Jewson Eastern Counties League, Premier division, 5th place with 23 points from 9 games, w7, d2, unbeaten.

Could have been kinder. We don't get any luck.

In terms of progressing, surely it could have been a lot worse? I'm not saying we should be complacent, but aren't we a couple of levels higher in the pyramid? With all the Conference sides in it, I can't believe the management wouldn't have taken that if offered?

Got to disagree with the posting earlier that said we should treat these games like league games, and that the performance is as important as the result. The qualifying rounds are nothing more than a means to getting a good draw against a league club in the first round. The result is everything, and I thought Saturday's game was the kind of nervy encounter you'd expect between 2 teams that realised that. We've played better than we did Saturday, but defended a bit better than we have recently, and took our chance when it came. I'd probably be a bit aggrieved if I was a Chelmsford fan, but I'm not, so tough luck to them.

Hi hb.

My reference to the draw was intended as irony. Without checking, I suspect that AFC Sudbury are from the lowest level of the pyramid still in the competition.

Still. It's decided on one game. The F.A.Cup has seen it's share of surprises over the years. They will be up for it. It's like their own cup final. We wont be taking anything for granted. Don't get me wrong, we will give them the respect that they deserve. A tricky team on their own ground.

Feel free to use any of that lot when ghost-writing t'lads columns in the match day programme. I'll waive intellectual property rights.

Oh, by the way. We weren't at the same game on Saturday.

P.S. I've just re-read your posting, hb. You're right in one respect. We have played better than we did on Saturday!

Speaking as an AFC Sudbury follower, here's a few bits of personal opinion to give you a bit of background to your next FA Cup game. AFC Sudbury is the strongest club in the Jewson Eastern Premier, which in turn is reckoned by many to be one of the 2 or 3 strongest leagues on the lowest rung of the pyramid. Still a long way below the Ryman Prem though. Briefly quite a successful club but dropped back down from the Dr Martens Premier after some financial trouble a decade ago (over-stretched playing Brentford in FA Cup 2nd round proper, having beaten Brighton in the 1st). We've won the league for the last 3 seasons, generally do well in the FA Vase, and have knocked out quite a few higher-league clubs over the years, including, if memory serves, Heybridge Swifts 2-0 very recently.

We have a neat (ok, small!) ground, pull in an average of c.350 attendees per match, and the small town is nice enough for a day out for football. It's Greene King, Adnams and Mauldons country for the beer drinkers reading this. The web site is at http://www.afc-sudbury.co.uk/

On the pitch we're better than most I've seen at the equivalent and adjacent pyramid levels (I'm based in S London so see a lot of Ryman 2 and Ryman 1 South football), playing attacking football and generally conceding very few goals. So I expect we'll give you a good game but to be honest the best I'm realistically hoping for is a replay. We're about as strong a team as you could face from the level of the pyramid we're at, but in the end I think this will have to be the 'cup final' for us. Not that we won't enjoy it of course.

I hope you're made welcome in Sudbury and enjoy the game when you get there.

I think the message board was taken down after the Tiptree kids got hold of it last season and things got a bit out of hand. No doubt some AFC fans will find their way onto here soon.

I noticed a few postings on another thread looking out for info on an AFC firm: our fans shout a lot but I've never heard of any violence at our games, nor do I ever want or expect to. Things are still very friendly lower down the pyramid.
