Brief match report

Most is covered during the 'online updates' but thought i'd add a few personal comments

Accomplished performance, but you do wonder what would have happened if we were up against 10 men.

We managed to avoid the banana skin on a sticky and very bumpy pitch.

We had a three on one late in second half which we managed to [****!!****] up, although it had a bit to do with pitch with ball not rolling and moving around

You always get nervous with our defence, but today it was as much worrying that the ball would bobble at wrong time.

All played reasonably well with no-one imo really outstanding, but equally no-one having a poor game.

Best goal was the third when Remy soared beautifully to head ball into path of Adolf who took it wonderfully lobbing the ball over the keeper.

I don't think anything else happened in second half, and fortunately both teams cooled it a bit and ref had a bit more control.

Was a bit surprised that Remy did not make staring line up as he seems best bet with Adolf to me.(Leon played well enough though).

First time seen Adolf but he impressed me.Looks a proven goalscorer, and many say players have pace and it turns out to be nothing special. In fairness, that guy does have effective pace.Adolf got the penalty with his pace.

Ryan looked like Bobby Moore/Rio Ferdinand at back-very very accomplished on the ball .Think he will progress to a league player.Arguably as good as Sam Sodge.Amazed that we stole him away from Fisher. He also looke very calm today despite his reputation to be hot headed.

Hasim never put a foot wrong but is more effective to the team in defensive midfield imo.

Glad to see Donovasn signed.About 6'1'' so ok in air.Rather slow though and definately unfit.First game is always difficult though, and i think despite the rave reports about James Smith, its always better to have a proper signed up player than a temporary loan.

With Kola coming back soon one hopes, all of a sudden with Ryan looking superb you feel better about the defence.

Star of defence was Standen at left back-never put a foot wrong-blocking, accurate passing.tackling, excellent positioning, even won a few headers. He had an almost perfect all round wingbacks game and in second half played more defensive and for first time in ages we looked solid on the left in defence.Maybe the quality of his direct opponent was'nt exactly Shaun Wright Phillips but nevertheless, he did have a good game in that deeper role.Well played DS.

Sad to see greg injured again-looked a foot injury this time albeit he also took a really heavy 'tackle' being launched 3 feet into the air.He seemd a bit dejected by it all.

Surprised Brown not a sub. as he seems best equipped to fill in defensive duties.(Leon `did ok there though for 20 minutes-in fact he did very well.

Did we find two new quality wingbacks today in Standen and Braithwaite ?

JK in midfield seem to give everyone a bit of extra 'security'.McGowan was brilliant 75% of time but made one or two silly errors aswell.

All in all, a better day at the office, but you do wonder about the quality of the opposition-maybe they had a bad day .

Thank you for the report, michael.

I am also surprised Brown was not there today, as I rate him highly from what I have seen so far.

Warren Ryan is turning out to be an outstanding player, and I hope we can keep him. I do not know where the reports of hot head came from, but having spoken to him, all I can see is total passion for his game.

But was it Sas or Sesay that came on as sub?

Thanks for your report MM, and for your/DB/Cookie's excellent updates during the game. Glad to see Standen worth a mention as he has tried hard without impressing before now. It may have been 'only' FA Trophy, but we have won a few quid and can look forward to a good home tie v Dover (fingers crossed). Also a good performance like today's might be what we needed to set us on a winning streak. Thanks again for the news!

It was Sesay who came on as sub for JK i thought.

Upon reflection James Donovan reminded me a bit of Ross Smith in style of play and build, albeit maybe an inch taller.

Think he needs to go some to get a bit fitter, but he handled everything fairly well today.

It can't be easy fitting into a new team and think he was a bit nervous.

Though a strong critic of Standens I am pleased to hear that he made the full backs position his own today.Just shows you that if you find the right position for a player it can make all the difference.Lets hope now that he is in a position on the field that shows off his true qualities I may be able to praise him instead of putting him down all the time.

If it WAS Sessay that came on as sub then I am most pleased. Was beginning to wonder if he had upset the guvnor or something. We have two/three tall guys that are restricted in pace and we have now 3 pacey players so mixing it i.m.o. with pace and height should be the answer. Opponents then cannot read our game as easily as having just the two big chaps up front.I was under the impression it was yhdego that came on but will have to wait for confirmation on that, nevertheless pace was on show today for a change, it seems.

Also glad to hear that one of the tall players got to a header as up till now none of them have managed to consistenly use their ariel abililities to the full.

Whilst he had a couple of reasonable long range shots, Sacha has had better games.

I think the report in NLP is via an independent reporter-Wendy Gee- in the local Soton 'PinkUn'.

I don't think she is too familiar with the Gate and i would suggest,Ryan and Standen and possibly JK and Adolf all had more influential games than Sacha.

Re Standen Cookie - I remember Lee Williams getting huge stick when in midfield, but then CK put him in the back three and he was consistently one of the best players. Hope DS turns out to be anything like as effective as him!!

Good win yesterday - don't care if it's against 10 or 11, we needed a win and hopefully we can kick on from here.

Graeme you are absolutely correct. I too was giving Williams stick in the same way but he did in fact turn me around as regards to his form when he did revert back into the defence.Looks like the same is happening all over again. Good that you should mention this simalarity.

Me, my dad and ryan counted the people in the ground and got to 150 and that was without the people in the bar. I think this blatant gate fiddling should be reported!!! No doubt i will make sure Mr Piper knows of this.
