BBC ESSEX

I have recieved a large number of replys to my suggestion that we consider a BBC Essex boycott.

Again this week we have a situation where we are getting occassional comments on Grays V Scarborough, Morcambe V Daggers, York v Canvey and Colchester V Bournmouth.

We do have live commentary on that famous Essex team West Ham.

I have the names of over 150 people who agree this is a disgrace and I am therefore going to suggest the following action to those people.

(1) We write formally to the DG.

(2) We write to the PM objecting to local radio stations large budgets.

(3) We ask that our local MP's request a refund on license fee as Essex licenses are subsidising east London coverage.

(4) We will ask under the Freedom of Information Act for a copy of the minutes of meetings where the decision was made to allow one BBC local radio station to target another areas audience. BBC Essex is competing with BBC London.

(5)I intend to contact other radio stations informing them of the situation.

From Monday I will be posting this message on all Essex teams websites aking supporters to tune into alternative stations.

We want BBC ESSEX for ESSEX not West Ham.

While on that subject I reckon and always have that BBC Essex's news coverage should be basically for the present day Shire county of Essex which ends at Brentwood and Thurrock. That means Daggers should never get equal rights with our own Essex professional clubs. Live commentary from Victoria Road is an abuse and mostly to do with the station managers desire to grab audience from the millions over the border in London land. I believe Kent has a similar grumble with their 'county' station and excessive coverage of Charlton Athletic. Nothing against Londoners but how many stations do they have already!

I've emailed the station manager at BBC Essex(her name evades me at present) about this and she said they had the authority to include East London boroughs as part of their broadcast area. We waited years for our own service and it soon appeared the 1.5 million people in Essex was too small for their liking.

BBC Suffolk with less than half the population and are promoting Ridgeons league. We're stuffed full of senior clubs at a higher level, yet expected to share the stations limited airtime with London.

Good luck with your campaign you're not alone in thinking this.

Notice they don't cover Leyton Orient.

Don't forget that Southend and Thurrock are now Unitary Authorities - so should be excluded from BBC Essex as they are no longer under the control of ECC tongue.gif wink.gif

I hope you get somewhere - can't say I am a fan of them featuring West Ham so heavily, especially when often the same game is broadcast on BBC London.

Have they added Canvey Island yet to the radio car - it never used to be on it.

The sports producers have always been good over there, but these matters are often out of their hands.
