Highest Gate

Recommended Posts

Interesting isn't how the Gravesend and Northfleet footballing public don't appreciate the higher standard of football.

If you look back to the times when we were challenging for promotion in the lower leagues, we had much higher gates !

Give me Conference football week in, week out any time (even if its mid to lower league position)- but I'm in the minority it seems.

We don't always agree, RR, but you are dead right on this. The product we are seeing on the field is as good as we have ever had, although watching Smelt, Burret, Woon, Woolfe and Brown was pretty special too.

Liam's team has taken our football to a different level, when you now consider the quality of the full time opposition we play against.

In the early 80's, most teams were part time, and although the football was of high quality, it simply doesn't match the speed, fitness levels or even the playing surfaces of today.

Absolutely Gazza !

Winning against someone like Halifax or Exeter actually means something.

Beating Harrow, Heybridge etc does nothing for me

To be fair under Fordy we also held our own in the Conference, despite a few relegation zone worrying periods from time to time.

May will be the month to see if Liam has improved the squad from the Fordy era the league table never lies !

Looks ok so far though - I predict an 11th place finish. Which for a club with our limited funds is fine by me.

thanks for the information.

I too watched most of the games in the alliance, can't recall what our gates were like in that to be honest, although the darts and stones i am sure would have seen gates in excess of 2000

I also watched almost all the games in the Alliance, before I went to Uni. I dont believe that apart from the Dartford game at the start of 81-82 season, any gate was anywhere near 2000. Sitford's 900 was the joke at the time and passing the 1000 threshold was rare.A couple of years earlier, but I remember my disappointment when only abour 2200 attended the Southern League Cup final 2nd leg.
More recently we got far more than that for the promotion clinching game with Havant, and of course the Canvey game.

I think Alan is right, I'm sure that the Dartford game in the 1st week of the 81/82 season is the only match that had a 2000+ gate in our previous Alliance/Conference stay.

I can't remember reaching 2000 for any other Dartford/Maidstone games in those seasons.

Didn't Alty win the title on the last day at Stonebridge Road in 79/80. I reckon they brought a lot with them that day but I doubt if we reached 2000.
