WORTHING GAME

Kevin-STFC

Recommended Posts

Metcalfe taken off and taken to hospital with suspected fractured ankle. Went 2-0 up and deservedly so, but they got their goal on the 47th minute and it lifted them and dejected us. Won a penalty after Ballard fouled someone which was tucked away and then it was all one way. Couldn't settle on the ball and they were finding more room and getting plenty of space down the wings.

Miller hit the bar with a great chip at 3-2 down, but Worthing were worthy of the three points for the second half performance. If we'd kept it tight for ten minutes at the start of the second half, we'd have been ok.

The comments on here are actually wrong - we didn't try to defend the lead at all, we kept attacking pretty much throughout. We did however contribute to our own downfall with some truly woeful defending.

Hodges' goal was superb. Josias picked the ball up just inside our own half and he got away from two plyers, one of which tried to foul him several times. He then raced away, pushed it past their left back and hit a peach of a low cross for Hodges to sidefoot past the keeper. Leigh Mason's was even beter though. A free kick on our right was played across the edge of the area on the floor (I'm not sure how intentionally) and it found Leigh on the far side of the area who hit the most brilliant curling first time shot around a defender and inside the far post. Absolutely brilliant goal although I suspect the angle Gary's camera was at it won't do the shot justice.

The second half had barely started and we'd conceded the first. A simple long punt into the box from teh right flank and their striker beat Parkin to the ball to glance it in. Parky's fault, I'm afraid although we have to stop people getting crosses in.

The second was the penalty after they just ran at our defence allowing the guy to waltz through befoer taking him down. Couldn't see from our end who it was. The third was following an advantage played to US after a foul on our player in midfield. They collected the ball, strolled through the defence and finished into the corner.

The fourth was similar, again defence backing off and making token challenges allowing a rlatively simple finish. At 2-2 Josh Miller hit the bar with a great chip over the keeper which the incoming Seedal just failed to connect with as it rebounded off the bar.

Worthy performances tonight from Darron Wilkinson who did the work of two men after Mets went off. Michael Alexis played very well after coming on in place of Mets and hit several excellent through balls which just failed to get us in. Josh Miller also had a very good game causing problems with his pace and looks a much more natural partner for Hodgey. Like Worthing's inbred fan though, we did look a bit toothless up front once Hodgey went off and they tightened up on Josias.

Defensively, we are just not good enough. Leon is great going forward but his defensive game is not strong enough, in my opinion. Ballard had several shaky moments at the back and Mavis and Daly were troubled by people running at them. Gotta sort it out as we're conceding far too many.

Not a bad turnout for a midweek game and some good noise, particularly in the first half. Quieter in the second, obviously.

Actually thought the quality of general football (from us especially) between the goals was very poor for what was otherwise a "six goal thriller"!

Agree pretty much with Ian's summary above - Slough's first was a superb move, and the second was even more stunning (both seen from the "wrong end").

Our 1st was a glancing header from a right wing cross - your keeper shouted, didn't get anywhere near and then blamed the defence. Second was our right winger cutting in along the goal-line and getting almost to the 6 yard box before a centreback went across him clumsily with the wrong leg. Not malicious, but definitely a penalty. Third was a very good finish on the volley from around 15 yards (our best goal), and the fourth was very harsh, with a Worthing deflection/block playing the ball 20 yards to our striker (who had been our right winger earlier the game) who outpaced the two defenders and ended up putting it through the keeper's legs.

We were very lucky with the one that hit the bar, but to be fair we smacked the post in the first half at 1-1. Ironic having such a swing to us given the way last season finished (we were 1-0 at half-time then lost 1-4)!

Very impressed with your support - I'd say easily 80, possibly 100 depending on who was in the stand etc. Also seemed to be quite a family support as well, which seems quite rare in this league (apart from us). The 7.30 kick-offs make it difficult for everyone to get to us (even our own fans).

And finally, sounds like you met "Dynamo Kev", our toothless wonder. Some of his classics include putting a curse on the ball, "We want class, not [****!!****]", "Close him up" and "He 'ad time to write a letter to 'is Grandmother".

Anyways, best of luck for the rest of the season.

First the positives

We turned up in the first half which we've struggled to do of late.

Josh Miller had an impressive match and looks a good partner for Hodges.

The two goals were very good and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Toothless Kev was in good spirit in the first half and appreciated our first goal.

The Negatives

Metcalfe's injury didn't look good. Looks like a long term casualty.

Old habits creeping back in - after looking comfortable in the first half the inevitable backlash happened and we couldn't cope with it or were not prepared for it. When Worthing scored early in the second half I knew we were in trouble.

Only 4 subs on the bench - shows we're a bit thin at the moment in the squad.

Harrow won again and are flying high now in the table. That can't be right!

Looking back, their minds seemed to be on other things in the second half, and before anyone says anything, I think that is quite understandable. You have a serious injured player just before half time, it will affect your game, however much you try and not think about it. (At what ever level you play)

In the first half, it was good passing football, and when we lost the ball, we hassled to get it back. Plus a cracking second goal.

Let's hope the rest will do them good, and they have a good game on Tuesday, with us fully behind them.

Come on Rebels.

I think it's time we signed another keeper and took Parkin out of the firing line for a few games. Playing in front of a back line that porous isn't going to be doing his confidence any good. As for the game, roll out all the cliches about game of two halves and you'll have it but I think Worthing were worse than us in the first half than we were bad in the second. A team doesn't lose one game all season and play that badly

Well everyone i took (two lewes supporters, an armchair Arsenal fan and someone who hates the premiership) thought it was a really good attacking game of football and a good advert for the Ryman Premier League.

The pitch really suited us and the two first half goals were brillant. Worthing came out flying in the second half, and as i left the bar saw their header go flying in and thought we are in trouble.

It really didn't help that Mets and Hodge (did you see him thank god in prayer after he scored!)went off injured, but i still didn't go home completely fed up and think from what i've seen of teams like Maldon and Redbridge, we will survive relegation, and really i'll be happy with that.
