Talking of Guru Nanak.....

Recommended Posts

You guys are clueless

The whole reason why Guru Nanak excists is because the Indians wanted their own club, run by indians, for indians.

Guru Nanak is a whole way of life and the football club is just one part of it

And, why on earth would The Fleet want to join forces with a club playing in an amateur league ?

And, don't harp back to higher attendances. We had a great indian guy in Balbir Belier (excuse the spelling) signed with us a few years back and he had come directly from the Gurus. Our attendances went up by about three people ! He was a reasonable player but found the training a bit heavy for him and prefered to play with his old team mates at the Gurus.

As for an asian joining the board, why would a asian businessman want to do that when has the opportunity to help finance his own organisations such as Guru Nanak.

You guys really do not understand indian culture do you !

Bit harsh, there RR. We are all guilty of treatng the asain community in Gravesham as just that, an asain community. Most under 40 asains are as British/Gravesendian as you or I.

As Nasser Hussain spoke of so eloquently, he his British through and through, but still incredibly pround of his Indian heritage.

This is the way I feel it should be in a fully integrated society.

If we could change the collective mindset, it is no longer us and them, but WE, then we can make progress in uniting all types of suppoerter in Gravesham.

From what I understand, the Guru Nanak complex was sold to them on the cheap, on the understanding it would remain open to all. Within months, those not of the Indian culture were apparently made unwelcome.

A multi-cultural society is where everybody joins as one as a nation, not where every little race or culture exists in part segregation (through their own choice or otherwise.)

All of this reminds me of all those pre-election threads, where I was branded a racist for suggesting there isn't & never will be a multi-cultural society. Seems of few of you have a different opinion now.

The new temple that is being built: I wonder if that piece of land was sold on the cheap too?

Personally, I think Gravesham council should find us a site for our new ground nearer to town - the Lord Street car park area might have been ideal.

I worked with a lot of them, jc, and they used to sit at the table and speak their own language. If that's not a way of segregating themselves, then i don't know what is!

I have never met any that wanted to be "British. Just watch them walking to Temple with their wives walking behind them. That has nothing to do with religion, but a woman is deemed inferior in the social standing. Thats not segregating themselves either is it? The Asian Community want to act as if they are still in Asia. That's not segregating themselves either, is it?

Just call me a racist and be done with it.......I call myself a realist!

I personally have no desire to call you a racist but you must understand that there is a difference in the generations of Asians or Indians who live in this country.

Amongst the second and third generation of asians (british in my opinion) who live in this country are a lot of people who are westernised and do consider themselves to be British. Amongst them are a lot of football supporters who follow the big teams. I, for instance, know several Liverpool supporters who, by the way, also support England.

These are the people who we should be trying to encourage to the Fleet along with other big team supporters of any race or creed.

I only left England 5 years ago, and i hadn't noticed any radical changes in the Indian friends i had...........The youngsters seemed to cling together more than their pioneering parents. As i said before, the Indian community have had 40 years to find their way to the Fleet. If they haven't, it is because they don't want to!

As for the rest of the community, most of them will only return when the Fleet provide an attractive package(Football and Stadia.)and value for money.

Spot on.
I have said the same thing all along.
I'm afraid AFF is not only wrong, but also misguided and out of touch.
Maybe it's like that in the States, but here in old Blighty, times are a changin'.

But AFF, what I am trying to get over is that their are differences within their community. A lot of the younger ones do want to, and indeed do in fact go to football. I personally have been to West Ham (unfortunately) with an Asian (as you would call her) and we will go again this year.
Actually I did get her to the Fleet once but she wasn't that impressed with the football.

So, the reason she won't go back to Gravesend is that she thinks the football isn't good enough but absolutely nothing to do with her so called community.

But that applies to a lot of people and so we should keep on trying to attract allcomers to our team.

Going to talk about Chelsea again, sorry. Stick with it though it is going somewhere. Honest!

I see what your saying Fleet of foot but I have something of a contradiction. Whenever I went to the Bridge I don't recall seeing many Asians. Not that I was ever looking out for them although I did once as I heard something about a very small minority coming to watch football.

I used to sit in the West Lower with about upwards of 6,000 others. My right at the very back of the stand and pretty much on the half way line view gave me a very good vantage point so I could see pretty much everything. I didn't see any asians on this perticular day.

Another time my mum wanted to come to a game so I gave her my ticket and went to sit with the tourists for the day in the £60 seats and about a billion miles away from the pitch. On this occasion there were all sorts of people in there. Asians, Chinese, Japanease, Australians, Americans they obviously had heard of the Abramovich storm and wanted to come down to see what was happening. Although even before the Russian moved in I recall regualary hearing vioces of different nationallities at the Bridge. However when I tried to get a chorus of "Stand up if you hate Tottenham" going I was met with some very weird looks.

Recently I went to watch Chelsea Arsenal in a bar on the Fulham road. In there I met an Australian tourist on his first visit to England. He watched a lot of premeirship football while at home. We talked for ages about all sorts of things footy relatedbut eventually made our way on to the subject of non-league football, he seemed genuingly interested in us as a club, our standing in the current football situation and also in footy history.

A lot of people come from all over the world just to be close to the stars they feel a million miles away from. This guy who had obviously never experienced any sort of Brittish soccer was asking me who our top scorer was, what was our managers name, where do we play our games ect ect.

Theres a market out there....
