How to get to Great Wakering by boat

Steph

Recommended Posts

Lotus Eater will (weather permitting) be cruising around 7 miles from Burnham to Great Wakering on 29th October. There will be no venturing out to the North Sea as on this occasion it is a small trip down the Crouch and then into the Roach and Narrow Cuts/middleway.

Hope to moor at GWR yacht club.

Tides on the 29th/30th are fairly friendly unlike when we went to Wivenhoe.

High water is at 10:44 am so inted to leave Burnham at around 8:30 am should get us to GWR at High Water or shortly after then we can tie up/anchor and get to shore. The boat will dry out as low water is at 16:30 and when we get back to the boat should be a walk to board.

Following day HW is at 10:28 (Clocks go back so there is less time in bed)

Here is the problem Sherbet has a party Saturday afternoon so I am looking for crew. Three berths available.

Regards

Leave it out Junior it might not be of much use to most of us but not only is Steph a fellow Towner, I find it interesting and far better than people banging on about what chip wrapper is best for twisting a story.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just telephoned GW yacht club. apparently they are no longer stationed at Great Wakering but at Rochford.

I will, weather permitting, do a recce on Thursday to see if there is anywhere to anchor close to the shore.

I do have one crew member for the 29th but there is still room for two more.

BTW installed a new toilet yesterday.

Recent emails with the editor of a newly published pilot. If anyone is interested.

Hi,

I am surprised by your comments about GW YC as I spoke to someone on the phone a few days ago and found them helpful and wanting to give assistance.

My purpose in researching this bit is that I want to go to a football match at Great Wakering on Saturday 29th and sail my boat (a leisure 23 - draft 1m) from Burnham to Great Wakering.

I went to GW YC (by car) on Thursday but at Stambridge it is too far to walk to GW. The YC is located on Purdeys Industrial Estate to the east of Stambridge. There are mud berths adjacent to a pontoon. When we were there the gates were locked and no one was about and therefore we discounted it.

Suttons Boat Yard appeared more promising however there are guard dogs and lots of signs saying private, keep out etc. I was told by the wakering guy that the former owner of the yard has recently died and he was not the most helpful of people. His wife Lyndsey may be more helpful. She asked me to ring back but I haven't yet.

Looking at an aerial photograph (Site http://www2.getmapping.com/Preview.asp?s...1&size=500) it appears that Barling Hall Farm may be the site that I choose to berth for the night. I will leave Burnham at around 08:00 to arrive at Barling Hall at around high water 10:44 (BST). If I cant anchor or reach the bank by dinghy it gives me time to get back to Burnham and still make the match.

If I can make the bank There are footpaths and a 3-4 kilometre walk to the ground. May be a problem of security for the dinghy/yacht. Looking at the photograph there are moorings on the river here.

Regards

Steph

Steph,

Many thanks for your message. I have tried to contact the GWYC to determine where their HQ is, but have not yet had any success. I will keep trying and come back to you.

I will also try to contact Suttons Yard about berthing.

What boat are you using when you go out through the bridge? What's her draught?

Kind regards,

Colin

Hi

I was looking for moorings around Great Wakering and was told that GW YC HQ is now at Stambridge on the Roach. Not in the area of your chart on page 86.

Suttons Yards (Lindsey) may be able to take overnight berthing but it is doubtfull.

This is important as people may want to berth overnight to catch an early High Water to go into the Thames Estaury via Havengore Bridge.

1 Crew space left!

Saturday appears that it will be a very pleasant trip but Sunday may be a problem.

If held over till Monday then visibility is going to be difficult. But I am convinced that now we will get to Great Wakering by boat.

(It is the coming back ???????????????)
