The cost of FA cup defeat

Recommended Posts

I was reflecting on the defeat yesterday and started to consider how this would effect the rest of the season.

Obviously there will be a major loss of income compared to last year when the cup run was worth in the region of £50K and helped greatly towards the wage bill. But this year with the alleged reduction in wage bill will this be an issue?

There is also the qudos of being in the cup and Windsor are already gloating at there victory yesterday - both of their fans that is.

The other side is that we can now concentrate on the leauge and focus on a top half finish which should be achievable with a bit effort from the team. Last seasons cup run did distract the team from the leauge hence the mid table finish - 60+ games in a season has its cost.

Well done to Wroxham for the way they won yesterday, but now it is time for Slough Town FC and its supporters to focus on the rest of the season and securing the future of the club.

Spot on, Staines. Now we can channel all of our energies into climbing the league. I did have to laugh at the Windsor reaction! It must be nice for them to have progressed further than us in a cup competition which they haven't done for as long as I can remember!

Let's hope their FA Cup run distracts them like it did us and they get relegated as they're hardly in a good league position now!

To be honest it shouldn't be that much of an issue, because no club should budget their wage bill on external finance. But it does obviously help to win money to help balance the books.

Last year though with so many cut draws at home especially the cost of Walsall match we would have had to pay out a fair bit too, so not as much money was won as many people would first think.

If you remember the last 5 seasons it has happened 3 times:

2001/2 FA CUP: STFC Prelim; WEFC 2Q
2002/3 FA TROPHY: STFC 1Q; WEFC 5R
2003/4 FA TROPHY: STFC 1R; WEFC 2R

Is that all you can find?

Only 3 times in all the competitions in the last 5 years have windsor done better than Slough!

You forgot this year. To be accurate and complete, in FA competitions over the past 5 years where STFC and WEFC have been in the same competitions (i.e Trophy and Cup), STFC has outperformed WEFC four times; WEFC has outperformed STFC four times, and on two occasions the teams have exited at the same stage.
