East Thurrock Match thread

I think we can all agree that, at the moment, defensively, we have a big problem. Without stating the obvious, teams, whether good or bad are finding it too easy to score goals against us, most off which are either poor ones to concede or defensive errors.

IMO the only quality defender we have playing at present(until Ballard comes back) is Steve Daley.

Carbon and Woodruff's qualities are as attacking defenders and when the attack breaks down are missing from the defence.

The other defenders, Avery, Lovegrove and Paget are IMO average defenders who are not quite up to this standard of football.

Once Ballard is back and bedded in alongside Daley this will be a big help but maybe not the complete answer to our problems mainly because Ballard is defensively a similar player to Daley (with a bit more pace).

Until we get someone in the mould of Saulsbury who was small, relatively quick, could read the game well, had a touch of quality about him and was the perfect foil for Daley our defensive frailties won't be completely solved.

I would say that Avery has improved tremendously since the start of the season and is putting in a lot of quality tackles when needed, but most of the time it seems to be a lack of ability in clearing the ball from the area.

This has already cost us several matches this season, and until this is solved it is going to cost us more.

I noticed during the AFC game that their central defensive pairing never dithered on the ball once. Whenever they got it it was either put in the stand or down the pitch. We fall foul sometimes of playing too much football both up front and at the back.

I'm not advocating we play long ball but twice in pre-season we conceded when defenders got caught in possession. I think Avery is a good player and will look a lot better when we have Ballard back. Last year when one of the three (Daly, Saulsbury, Murphy) was missing we looked shaky as well.

I agree with Tom - Avery has improved and I actually think Lovegrove has had two decent games. It is occasional laspes and a failure to clear the lines that is the big problem.

There is no 'e' in Daly.

Sounds like a fanzine (as per "There's only one F in Fulham"). Anyone old enough to remember "Rebels without a Clue"?
