New stadium or what!

I have just returned from the council meeting that was held at the Club house at Stonebridge Road I am still in shock as I am sure are the other half dozen or so Gravesend faithfull.

The news that we have all been waiting for was announced tonight.

That Gravesend council, along with government agencies and the club are working together to ensure that a new stadium is built for GNFC.

The news came as such a shock and was so matter of fact that we all did a double take. Quotes were checked and re-checked , but no it was not a mistake.

A full report will appear in the Gravesend Reporter this week and also in Fridays non-league.

Councillor Burden who I believe had taken a fair bit of stick from some fans, was amazing, he even had his photo taken wearing a "Fleet First" wristband.

He stated at the meeting that the council has not had any real contact from Gillingham for some five months and that whoever it had been that had approached the council re a stadium or sharing would have been listened to in the same way. But he said " we are Gravesend Council and we cover Gravesend and Northfleet area, so GNFC are our local club".

After this part of the meeting was over a few of us went outside for some fresh air, still not really believing what had happened, but it was true, we had all heard it right, even the reporters from the Reporter could not believe it, they left, wearing one of the wristbands as well.

It's not going to happen tomorrow, but it is happening and I think, Brian and the board, along with John Burden and the council all deserve a huge vote of thanks from us all.

We can all do out bit, we need more people to come to matches, we need to increase the cash going into club, more than ever we need a good positive feel about GNFC. The feel good factor in catching, lets make sure we all encourage others to feel about the club as we all do.

Come on you Reds, wherever you play, I for one will always support you.

Jess

I nearly lost it a few times tonight and, holding back my tears of joy, almost bought a round! Luckily Chris was on hand to nip that in the bud and preserve my reputation.

Can you post Cllr Burden's email address so we can all thank him profusely? I think we will be seeing him at Stonebridge Road VERY soon and everbody should line up to thank him and shake his hand.

Best quotes tonight from Cllr JB:"The way results are going Gillingham could be playing Gravesend & Northfleet next year" and "I never promise what I can't deliver".

Fantastic night for all concearned. This is not only a clear cut indication of our new stadium but a vote of confidence from the council that they are on our side.

Burden took some stick for some misquoted comments that he made in the paper, much of this stick was from me, well after last night he more than made up for it.

Well done Gravesham council, well done Gravesend and Northfleet Football Club and well done everyone thats worked so hard to put us in the position that we were in last night.

The only dissapointing thing was the lack of Fleet followers we had the meeting, enough news was put out about it why did so little turn up.

Obviosuly many have been followers of the Fleet for almost sixty years longer then I have so I wouldn't doubt anybodies commitment, but this was your opportunity to ask the Council 'what about us?' We should have been out in force demanding answers, instead chimmys were talked about for the first twenty minutes.

No-body should be doubting the enormity of this meeting, it is possibly the biggest of the clubs history and certainly of the Kilcullen era.

In the words of some cook from Norwich lets be 'aving you!

Post insults below.

Unfortunatley , although I intended to go down , I had a few PC`s to sort at home and with tonights trip to Hereford and Up at Stanstead tomorrow , I had to spend the evening sorting them.

Great news. I did hear that some enviromentalist type geeks had been asked by Gravesham Council to do soil and site anaylisis at a place not too far from Stonebridge road with a view to "Recreational and community activities"

this was a couple of weeks ago but didnt quite connect at the time

I hope it's not that field in Swanscombe, it'll be knocked down whilst still in development <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Seriously though, fabulous news. Can't wait to see it get under constuction and the end product no doubt in a few years time.

Absolutely stunning news.

Cannot quite believe it yet, after all these years, we are now giving ourselves every chance not only to get into the Football league, but to actually prove beyond any doubt that we are THE best club in Kent.

worth checking out www.footballgroundz.co.uk and www.footballgroundguide.co.uk to see what can be built up to an 8,000 capacity.

Some are beautiful little stadia.
