Defensive headers. 5 out of 6 goals conceded via headers

I know i keep returning to this subject and am boring myself, but when you look at our 6 goals against,5 are as a direct or indirect result of losing out in the air defensively.

Staines-one direct header and one indiect to far post then slotted home.

Worthing-header -guy unmarked in centre of goal.

Fisher-Watts headed goal-inevitable.

Staines first goal -indirect result of header to far post then slotted home.

You read the match report on Slough forum and it is full of how Slough kept on winning aerial ball up front(not there so can't really comment).

Does that not all add up to desperately needing someone at back who can help us defend the aerial ball.Kola's return will help but he is never going to be the greatest in the air.

Maybe if we had let 2 fewer headed goals in, we could have turned 2 draws into wins, and thus 4 more points-play-off position-and thus bigger crowds and more money into the club. !!!

Its the final but vital piece into what otherwise is a really good squad that CK has assembled

I agree completly this has been a serious problem for a number of seasons now even are last season in the conf we lost out in the aerial battle for the most part.

It is true that we need a tall man at the back that will get his head to the ball. To be fair on yesterdays performance,we were missing Keisters presence a lot.He has fitted in well at the back and in fact has been exceptional and that loss was noticed yesterday. With him the defence is sound but I agree that a tall guy would help no-end. I still maintain that its the MIDFIELD that is letting us down so far.

As for the overlapping full backs, Oates is well of pace & dosent put in the good balls these days. Green had a stinker yesterday too.

Can't see how you can say it is the midfield that is letting us down.

Played a blinding 20 minutes on sat with the first goal coming from a great run down the wing, cracking cross for an easy goal. Second goal coming from a run into the box creating the penalty. Then we played the long ball for most of the game missing out the midfield completely.

Hardly the midfield's fault if the ball is flying over their heads I would have thought

Quite simply its because the midfield are so deep the gap in midfield leaves us no option but to make the long pass up field, if only to relieve the pressure (re:i.e Bill Edwards).Sometimes you get away with a lucky flick on but most of the time the ball will just keep coming back.

the two goals were long balls that we got away with but they were probably balls out of defence and not directly from the midfield. The front players then did the rest.

Shows how weak willed i am-could not resist the temptation to post that 7 out of 8 goals conceded now directly or indirectly(assisted) conceded from headers.

In fairness, its not the whole story as if you control midfield better, you give the opposition less opportunity to get the crosses in.

On a positive note this morning, the other side of the argument is that we have only let one goal in from 'groundplay'.

last season we would have conceded both in the air and on the ground, so can we call that progress.

i guess we simply strive for perfection and never to concede and to plug the weak link which is so obviously our aerial ability in defence.

As Sam Allardice would say-you start with nil goals against so don't lose the nil !!
