Fashion's at the Fleet?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this posting, but I am serious...

I read a message further down the fleet about us not being fashionable enough for Sky cameras, which reminded me that I noticed against Scarborough that some of our supporters (particularly the younger ones) where actually dresses quite well.

I know it's a funny subject to mention, and I'll probably get a few replies calling me and other "dressers" tarts, but it's good to see Fleet fans at least dressing well.

Any Comments??

Nevermind.

Not sure about the others but it is generally considered that my Depotivo [****!!****]a shirt is at the cutting edge of fashion.

Stella McCartney has been after me for ages, but I'm not giving it to her without a fight! Or my shirt either!

If you call shell suit bottoms with white socks and black leather slip ons fasionable then you must be one step ahead of the rest of us in the fashion stakes. Don't tell me - odd flourescent socks will be back in fashion soon!!

Ok, fair point about the tracksuit trousers and loafers!! - I didn't say that everyone was well dressed.

Some other replies, although humorous, were a little predictable.

My own personal view is that a Fleet match is not just a game off football, but a chance to promote our area in general.

I have always found it funny how not just at Fleet but others clubs, some fans have the front to direct regional banter at home or away supporters (depending on who you are), when they themselves either look like extras from the ‘Walton’s’ or that ‘Norm the Nerd’ Character from the television advert a few years back.

Sometimes I get the picture at the Fleet that the younger fans are looked down upon by the older blokes.

Like-I-said, next time your at the Fleet keep an eye out for the younger mob.

Cheers

Concerning football and fashion, this evening at Barnet I will for the first time this season, be wearing an all blue two piece ensemble. The belly top 'harrington' type jacket featuring pleated darts at the back, in a fetching 'Fleet' red and adult proof interior and exterior zips with button up cuffs (to stop you wiping your nose). The trousers feature the notorious low slung re-enforced crotch for maneuverability and pocket billiards and extra baggy Chaplinesque legs. Beneath the jacket will be worn a denim effect cardboard shirt, which is impervious to all known substances, both natural and man made with the exception of ink.

The leading edge of haute couture.

Thank you Royal Mail for being twenty years behind the times.

Madarina, darling. You are so so right. I can just see Mr Chariman in a Paisley Wilton all in one cat suit split to the waist with a silk ruffled shirt (a la Laurence Llwellyn Bowen) and then there's the players. Oh the thought of Liam in a little black lace see through number and the one they call the beast - your imagination could run riot. Back to the drawing board!!!!

How did you manage to leave the chic of terrace fashion off your list.

In all seriousness, its good to see terrace fashion at Stonbridge Road.

Luckily we have so far avoided , the Burberry hat.

The hat of choice amongst spotty teenagers and fat blokes. Stone Island, Lacoste, Henri Lloyd, Aquascutum by all means.

But the fleet must stand alone against the Burberry hat invasion, it aint big and it aint clever.

Good to see a genuine reply from someone who is clued-up on 'terrace culture', I was begining to give up.

Agree about Burberry hats, I prefer Henri Lloyd, Ralph Lauren, AJ or Paul & Shark myself.

Good that you mentioned Stone Island, along with CP Company and Lacoste it has become the leader around the country over the last 8 year or so.

Hope to see a bit more of the above appearing at Fleet games in the near future, no doubt given a bit of time we'll be seeing SI jackets, Lacoste sweaters, Armani jeans and Rockport or Camper footwear becoming more popular at our place and on our travels.

Cheers MD

Fair point there. A lot of fans going to football will be wearing "trackie bottoms" (affect Scouse accent here for added authenticity) doesn't mean that it's any good though.

Leisurewear I feel should be the preserve of proper leisure activities, and not used as "normal" clothing.

If however, watching the Fleet, pint & a pie in hand is your only form of cardiovascular activity though, then fair enough.

Horses for courses surely.

Can't say I agree with the SI, Burberry, Harold Lloyd (whatever) look.

Do we all want to look like Chelsea FC clones?

I can just see it now - a little posse of wannabe hooligans huddled behind the goal, comparing how much money they wasted on their stone island jackets and henri lloyd shirts. To be perfectly honest they'd look like a sad bunch of clones, devoid of their own personality. Does it really matter what people wear to the match? 1) You don't get an extra Conference point for having people dressed in Aquascutum gear, and 2) I can't quite imagine Sky assessing which games to show live based on which club has the best dressed fans!!

Each to there own on the clothing debate, I suppose if someone’s been dressing in low budget clothing for time then they ain’t suddenly gonna start flashing the cash in Selfridges or Woodhouse.

Most people probably don't realise it, and some will no doubt dispute it, but my own personal opinion is that the amount of casually dressed supporters a club has is often a good measure of the success a club has on the field. Not saying that the club with the most is automatically the best, but for example if in a few years the Fleet gains League status, then mark my works we would see more and more dressers turn up.

In respect to the ‘Chelsea FC clone’ look, then fine mate that’s your opinion. It ain’t just Chelsea though mate. League ( and a small number of non-league) clubs from all over the country, Shrewsbury, Carlisle, Oldham, Plymouth, you name them and the casual look can be seen at all these places.

One thing is for sure though, as long as we are all united in our support for the Fleet then it doesn’t really matter what we wear (much).

Cheers

How can you quantify success against how many wannabes turn up in Stone Island jackets? Perhaps the players gain pride from seeing some clown in a grands worth of clobber supporting from the terraces!!? As long as the Fleet fans carry on giving such great vocal support to the boys I couldn't care less if everyone turned up in a plastic bin bag with holes for arms and legs! If I've been drawn into this as a wind up, then fair play, but otherwise it would be preferable if you let on who you are rather than masquerading behind an unregistered alias. I for one don't want hooligan wannabes in flash gear following the fleet as some sort of fashion show, but if people want to cheer the boys on wearing expensive clothes then so be it, but they are worth no more to the club than an old fella in shell suit bottoms and slip on shoes.

Easily as I'm about to explain...

How many men in gear did we get at Fleet when we were in Beazer Homes League Sothern Division? - Not many, if any at all.

When Gravesend played Canvey towards the end of last season, I noticed the large numbers of lads scattered around the ground - probably about 70-100, many of which I recognised as supporters of some of the big London clubs. They had turned up to watch the Fleet in the same way that they travelled up as part of a small group to watch the likes of Chelsea, West Ham, Millwall, Spurs and Arsenal. They had been drawn by the high profile of the match and many of them ,myself included, have returned on a more regular basis.

The more sucsess on the pitch, then the more supporters in the stands, the more supporters in the stands the more casuals.

If you honestly belive that if GNFC were to every reach the football league and still be ignored by groups of well dressed clued-up casuals, then your dreaming. Lets just keep our fingers crossed that one day we will both get the chance to see for real.

Is it just me or does "groups of well dressed clued-up casuals" leave the nasty taste of Irvine Welsh and his hooligan memories of Hibees & Jam Tarts in your mouth?

If so, then "Chelsea, West Ham, Millwall, Spurs and Arsenal" can keep their f*****g "casuals" and the trappings that come with it.
