A friend of mine has suggested you try this, mate...

 

Try hitting Tab when the Dell screen appears, watch the BIOS 'POST' (the checking memory, ID-ing CPU and HDs stuff) boot messages and note any errors then, when the POST has finished, but before the actual boot begins, repeatedly press 'F8'.

 

That will let it boot into Safe Mode. If that works successfully, then the HD may not be screwed, just the OS - which may be fixable. Get back to me if it works.

Too late mate, Dell guy is coming round today to pick up the CPU. I think I may have tried that already when I phoned the Dell helpline.

 

I'm sure if it's a problem with the BIOS they'll pick it up straight away. Thank your mate for the advice.
