Once again, we pick up a win without really looking convincing.. for a team who are bottom of the League and lost 6v1 at Northwood this week, I felt we really didn't test them that much.

Am very glad for the win, but I felt our concentration was not fully there and we seemed incapable of making even the simplest of passes at times. I get the feeling we are really going to get caught out soon.. I hope it's not next week in the FA Cup.

Well done to Tony Boot though, made the best of the chances that came his way - and unlucky not to net a hattrick. And Palmer, although out of position a few times, did well at right back. We are really missing Steve Daly at the back though. Thought Paul Ellis did OK for his first game, looks combative (stuck the elbow and leg in slyly when the officials - especially the whistle-happy referee - weren't looking). Felt we didn't use our set pieces effectively though.

I know I'm being negative.. just saying how I saw the game.. we made an awful team look just bove mediocre hehe. But goals are what count and we managed to stick our chances away.

End on a nice note - good to see Hale back in the line-up, was unlucky not to score and always a good laugh with the fans. We need players like him at the club.

PS. How much longer has Darron Wilkinson got to go in his recovery?

Your not being negative Michael , I quite agree . I said last week that winning by not playing well can't be a bad thing . But like you say , it does scare me that we will get caught out .

Thought Tony Boot was excellent today. He worked tirelessly for the team and his two finishes, especially the second, were outstanding. Also what a difference Christian Metcalfe made when he came on. He did not waste one pass while he was on the pitch and our midfield didn't look the same without him. Everyone can talk about Sammy's goals or Daly and Barrowcliff at the back but for me he has been our best player so far this season and long may his current form continue. The worrying thing is that for a straight red he will (I presume) have a three match ban starting Monday which means he will miss Barking away, Hampton in the FA Cup at home and then Wingate (or Hampton) away on the next Tuesday. Three big games where we will need to perform well to get results. The strange thing I found today was why he was (presumably) rested. I can understand that Sammy maybe needed a break but Metcalfe will have time off during his suspension. I thought Hakki had a poor game by his standards today; other matters on his mind I suppose. I just hope that Gilkes and, to a lesser extent, Wilkinson are back soon to bolster that midfield when Hakki almost certainly disappears soon. Also the return of Howard or Daly could help as Ricky Browne (who by the way is starting to look more impressive game by game IMO) could always move forward. The only other point I have is that I wouldn't mind seeing Alvin Bubb start on Tuesday if Gilkes still isn't fit. Byron Bubb started today's game alright but he faded as the match went on and I am not sure about the quality he brings to the team for a whole match. When Alvin came on he looked to get at their right back every time he got the ball and looked much more dangerous than Byron. Just my opinion obviously!!! P.S. Sorry for the unbelievably long post. I got carried away.

Metcalf has a two game ban starting Monday (It was not a straight red) He was rested so that Browne could look at Elliss. Source Metcalf during the half time kick about

Thougt we did enough today, had a decent shape, but didnt have the foot to the floor by a long way. Boot was good, Velli was way below his normal standard, and Spencer was indifferent. Bubb failed to fire. All in all the midfield failed to spark, and thus we didnt perform up front - no service no goals - midlling service = two goals. I just worry what will happen at Lewes, who are going to come at us at least as hard as Harlow did for the first twenty minutes, but with a highly physical side to their team as well. Sly kicks, frequent shirt pulling, fast free kicks, and a man over the ball when its our kick. (Sounds like Stevenage last time we played them!)

I thought we were quite poor yesterday but got the result so it does not really matter. I share the fear that soon we will be badly caught out.

Glad to see Hale play but was surprised that he was criticised by some sections of the crowd. He is naturally going to be a bit low on confidence after being dropped for non-footballing reasons. He still had an impact of the game providing an aerial threat and creating Boot's second goal. It seems Browne will pick Boot and Winston on Tuesday and that may be justifiable as they are in the goals. I just do not see them as a partnership that can impose themselves on other sides. Winston's pace and willingness to run combined with Hale is surely the best option.

Very surprised to hear that Paul Reid has been released. I can understand the player's frustration as I thought he was a solid player that we may have struggled to hold onto. I am huge fan of Barras and woud not have picked Reid ahead of him. But as numerous fans commented when we lose Veli, Barras would go into the midfield and Reid play left back. Alternatively Reid could have played on the left side of midfield. Surely the squad is going to be too thin once Veli goes.

Referring back to a couple of posts above.

The Northwood 6-1 score against Wembley; Northwood's game is a very different style to ours. We are very much like the Liverpool team of last year where we play defensively and create little, but what we do create, is a very good opening. Northwood's game is similar to the current Arsenal style of attack, and attack quickly. Both styles are effective as the results (Not scorelines) have shown.

Radders is spot on about Metcalf. His whole game makes the midfield tick and also allows Veli to play that bit more forward pulling the strings further up the pitch. His communication, work rate and distribution have all been first class, but the thing which worries me about him is his temperament and continual use of 'foul language'.

I can understand why Reid has gone and it's been on the cards for a few weeks. With Browne looking at getting in another midfielder hopefully in the same mould as Hakki (creative) to play alongside Metcalf, hopefully Hakki's sentence won't affect the side too much. Reid did understand he wouldn't have got into the side ahead of Barras and did hold out for a while, but it's nice to see a player leave and not have to mention lack of money as a motive.

Team selection - was pleased to see Ellis given a run as he's done well in the reserves but needs to continue doing the simple things first and keeping the ball in the teams possession, but plenty of potential. Sammy was rested as he had a slight knock. Thought Ricky did ok, but Adrian more than ever looked suspectible to turns and pace.

Midfield just wasn't there and when Metcalf came on for the last 30 minutes, that changed and we controlled the game from there. Was glad for Steve Hale to get a start and thought he did OK without doing anything out of the ordinary, but a comfortable performance. Byron started well and faded quickly, and Alvin was a disappointment for the first 15 minutes he was on as he didn't get involved at all.

Alvin looked excellent when he came on. I know this sounds horrible, but i hope Hakki doesn't go down before Metcalfe is back, as our midfield will look ever so weak. Defence looked dodgy first half, although they gelled towards the end.

For the first time in ages I felt really confident despite us playing very poorly especially the first half. I thought that we were never in danger of losing. I think the management were quite confident as well as thats why Ellis was given his debut and other changes were made.

One of the positives that came out of yesterday was Dominique's performance in goal. He caught well and saved when a player was through on goal and his two goal kicks created the goals. The management have a headache who to play in goal on Tuesday I feel.

Thought Dean Palmer had another good game yesterday as did Ricky Browne who i'm still not sure about, but he is getting better. Adrian had his worst game for us so far. Byron was quiet and with Gilkes missing there was not enough on the wing.

Barras had his usual steady match and Spencer had an awful start but got better. Boot played very well (but I agree we have to have a big striker up front) and Hale played better after not doing too well in the first half.

Moment of the match though was when the Wembley player kicked the ball in his teammates private parts from about 3 yards!
