Gate 314

Well today was pay back time and town added the interest as we seemed to want it just that little bit more. Town fans were jubilant with the win after the humiliation of the Essex Senior League Cup Final and Matty Negus was the best we’ve seen him for some time. On 5 minutes Rudi Hall took a free kick from just outside the box which Matty glanced past Hickman. 1 – 0. Dream start for Town. Dean Green was inspired too shooting just over. Hickman was in fumbling mood in the first half need two attempt on at least two occasions to recover some fairly plain crosses. Abbey got a free-kick and shot over not troubling Chopper. A Rudi Hall header was deflected for a corner. Disco David Allen and Russell Penn were on form tackling back time after time. A Johnny Morgan shot was tipped over the bar by Hickman. Lee Smith had a shot over. Just before half time Adam Gant was booked for nothing by a ref who was easily conned by some of the old Abbey antics.

Second half began slowly and Lee Smith having had a good first half made way for Niall Ritchie who immediately started to give Abbey defence the jitters. Rudi Hall and Niall Ritchie were linking up well to win valuable position. Paul Campbell had Hickman at full stretch. Matty Negus weighted a pass perfectly that set Dean Green in a one on one with Hickman. Niall Ritchie headed just over from a Johnny Morgan cross. An Abbey free kick at the other end was headed over. Niall Ritchie had a one on one with Hickman who saved well with his legs. A Russell Penn shot was deflected wide for a corner. Dean Green and Paul Campbell off and Steven Velandrea and Bradley Brotherton on. Every time Naill Ritchie got the ball the Abbey defence wobbled under the pressure. Then on 84 minutes Waltham Abbey resident Bradley Brotherton hoofed the ball up field to Dave Ayres on the edge of the box who headed past his own keeper. 2 – 0. Town fans we jubilant Dave covered his head with his shirt in terror. No one was anywhere near Dave Ayres so it must have been a rush of blood to the head. Then finally on 90 minutes Matty Negus had a dig through a crowd of players from almost the edge of the box hard and low and yes Hickman was beaten again 3 – 0. Well Town fans revelled in the win which started to heal the wounds of the Cup Final defeat. All the town players played well.

Have to agree felt sorry for Ayres as I thought it was the keeper who was more at fault for the own goal.

Good performance by Town, and agree Matty looked sharp on Saturday.

Abbey were unlucky with the OG, but we were the better side on the day.

I was disappointed to hear the Abbey 3 getting a bit of stick as he came of the pitch. Thought that was a bit unnecessary.

He did get involved in a few antics through the game but you have to expect that from time to time. I think he also got involved in a bit of handbags at the end but I did see a town player goading him.

Personally I think this sort of thing should not happen at this level of football.

A bit of good humoured lively banter is one thing but sometimes I think people go a bit far, these chaps are not high paid premiership stars but ordinary guys like the rest of us.

I would like to think that opposition players enjoy coming to town.

Anyway good game for the town

Disagree TomS

Ok so he deserved a reaction for his antics but some of the things I heard were unnecessary, and beyond the mark.

Reaction does not mean nasty insults!

I agree he did play some tricks out there but you are always going to encounter players like that somewhere.

I think credit should go to the Abbey no 3 for playing so well despite the rare disorder of the centrral nervous system that causes him to fall to the ground clutching his face when pushed in the chest.

I havent read the match report. But was the number three wasnt by any chance Nicky Burt ?
When Hertford played Ware last season a Ware player got sent off when Burt went to ground clutching his face !
