Advertising ideas.

Apologies – this is a bit of a long post! Having been away for a week I’ve come back and read the various threads with interest but particularly the one on advertising and trying to boost attendances.

Firstly, great credit should go to Barclays Bank and to the person that arranged it, which I believe was Roy Merryweather. I’m disappointed I’m not around on Monday to go into the branch and see them all wearing Rebels shirts!

There’s also been some great ideas posted on this board, both now and in the past, about various ways we can increase the crowds at games and I firmly believe it’s not idea a lack of ideas that are the problem, it’s that we haven’t got anybody properly co-ordinating them.

I think most people agree that it’s too big a risk for the club to employ a Commercial Manager and it’s also unlikely that anybody would take on the role on a commission only basis. Anyway, we have “Commercial Manager’s”, in fact we have potentially 300 as we can all undertake that role. What’s missing is direction and co-ordination.

Take the fixtures poster idea. Over the last couple of years Glen has produced some excellent artwork advertising the next 3 or 4 games or one-off specials such as the matches against Windsor. Without anybody co-ordinating how they actually get to the various shops/restaurants however, it will have no impact. We could do something very simple and dedicate a single page in the programme to “Commercial Supporters of Slough Town FC” and list all those outlets who have agreed to display a fixtures poster. We get something, they get something.

Somebody though needs to be managing that project, ensuring there are enough people working with them to hit as many outlets as possible, ensuring that the opportunity for those outlets is “sold” to them in a consistent and professional manner, arranging the posters with Glen and agreeing who is going to take them to each place as updates come out etc. That’s what is missing, not the idea itself.

There will be people whose jobs enable them to undertake certain co-ordinator roles more easily. For example, schools are often mentioned as a potential audience and we have at least one school teacher on here who will have access to communication channels with other schools as well as his own. We don’t have to make it difficult for ourselves.

If we had enough people willing to commit their time to act as co-ordinators we could present the idea to the club through Roy and Bernard and also to the Trust. If they were to agree there could be a meeting each month or two with the club where each co-ordinator updated what was being done and how successful it’s been. What do people think? Good idea? Bad idea? I’m quite happy for people to shoot the idea down in flames but honestly feel it’s co-ordination that is needed if the excellent ideas people keep putting forward are ever going to get off the ground.

Totally agree with this. We need people to take on the responsibility of organising things so that all these good ideas do not go to waste.
