South Bank - no more?

Steph

Recommended Posts

Went to the pub tonight and met a bloke from Middlesbourough. Got to talking as you do, and he said that South Bank's football ground had been built on and, as far as he knew, the club was no more.

Those old timers amongst us may remember a Trophy game at South Bank on a Tuesday evening - about 1983 or so. I was recovering from Chicken Pox and it seemed to tie in quite nicely with the Peoples march for jobs. Can anyone confirm. Have South Bank actually now joined the realms of the defunct?

BTW EFC won that day and it was a good night out.

Two points:

I hope South Bank get back on track, despite the riot we endured up at their place. I never saw Steve King run so fast! Or some of our now more elderly fans, come to that.

As someone who was old enough to demonstrate against Thatcher in those days (and before anyone starts I have no time for Blair either!) and who new somthing about what was going on in those days I find your comments about the job centre and creating jobs out of thin air, and not blaming the government, a bit rich mr. egg.

I suggest you take a crash course in economic history ( as well as English)

Good Grief - I am hardly an extreme leftie. I just know a fair amount about the politics of the time and the crassness of the attitudes as well. Something that appears to have lived on apparently.

if theyd marched as far as the jobcenter they might have found some work

In 1983 wasn't the job centre called "The Labour Exchange"????

Peoples march for jobs, Good grief I bet that sorted out all the economic problems of the time, Probaly just a load of students & lazy arses with nothing better to do,
I and most of my year left school 3 years earlier & walked into jobs all over Enfield, Belling, Ripaults, Pickfords, Thorns, and a favourite for school leavers Polyco in Brimsdown, Oh happy days brown envelope with cash in it on a Friday straight to the White Hart or Goat or Southbury pubs, far too busy for pointless political marches.

As for the game, too far to get up on a Saturday for a youngster like me at the time!

Hmm, methinks your memory is playing tricks Ronaldo old bean. I remember the atmosphere at South Bank as absolutely fantastic, with a broken coach window coming as a complete surprise at it was so out of character with the whole evening. Sure you're not confusing it with Ilkeston?

My abiding memory of South Bank was the look of confusion on the face of a toothless elderly local when we walked into a pub, and Medders ordered a pernod and lime for himself and a pint of lager for Cherry Mosteshar of the Enfield Advertiser. Clearly they don't have men who dring Pernod in the North. Come to that, do they have them down South??

So many grounds have fallen foul of greedy owners down the years ,The first one I remember was a scots 2nd division club called Third Lanark in the 60s when I was a young lad.The stadium cathkin park stood derelict for quite a few years as I recall. Also other venue's lost in more recent times ,Woodford,East Ham ,Eton Manor,Slough,South liverpool,Horwich ,Clydebank, wimbledon,Epsom & ewell,Leytonstone, wealdstone,Walthamstow ave,Ilford (The original club) wokingham, newbury, Anyone think of any more.

The original Aylesbury, Barking, Bedford Town and Romford. Accrington Stanley's Peel Park (also stood derelict for many years). Tooting & Mitcham, Ware, Witton Albion, Weymouth, Southall, Dartford. This is a bit of a stream of consciousness, but I'm typing them in as I think of them. Oh yes - Enfield
