Substitute Keeper

From where we were standing just next to the lino (so not completely up with play) the decision to send Mel off tonight was justified.

Unfortunate mistake by Macca just mistimed the backpass and committed Mel to come out and handle outside of the box.

We obviously have the benefit of hindsight but I still cant see the thinking behind not having a substitute keeper on the bench. Surely Justin will not do this (to the team or Ross)again.

Game though Ross is I feel that in addition to sheer ability kicking and saves we missed the verbal instructions an experienced keeper gives.

I recall the same thing happening last year when Gothard was stretchered off during a match and we lost that 3-1at Staines.

It's just bad luck, the one game he chooses not to have a sub keeper the keeper is off it happens what once a season? Does anyone know if Dale is carrying a knock? I think if Justin had not have a sub keeper for every game then criticism may be justified, as is he was just unlucky.

Was it ball to hand, handball, or as was being discussed is that irrelevant when it comes to goalkeepers out of the area?

I think this will run and run. For all the game I thought it hit mel in the chest but some 'Ricay supporters put me right...so justified sending off although I have seen a yellow given in those circumstances.

What does not excuse the officials is the way their No. 7 was treated after going in on Ross twice...both yellow card offences but hey, we had the run of the green against Chelmo and didn't against Maldon.

The plus points that came out of this game is that we played some good football and our effort was excellent.

I would imagine that when we play the return match in October, our lads will be up for it and I for one am looking forward to having the beating of them at their gaff.

I think the decision to play a sub keeper in a league game is finely balanced (I would always play a reserve keeper in the cup). the worst thing that can happen is pretty much what happened last night - an early red and the extra outfield player gives more options.

However what I can't understand is that having made the decision not to have a keeper on the bench, given that we are playing with 10 men for 80 minutes, we then only use two subs. It's illogical captain. I would also be interested to know the reasoning behind the inclusion of Smith last night.....I know I've asked this before but is he the same James Smith as in the under 18s or not? Hopefully it's not for the reasons some imps were putting up last night....

Onwards and upwards...

At the end of the day who wants to be a sub keeper? you spend 90% of games getting splinters sitting on the bench. The option is to have a your talented keeper on the bench. It would be interesting to find out why after having a sub keeper every game so far Justin didnt have one last night.

dale brightley was there last night but there were 5 other outfield substitutes. logically i would assume he thought he wouldnt need the sub keeper and named 5 outfield players to offer a bit more to him. it is HIS mistake...schoolboy error!!!

I saw Dale before the match, and he was wearing a grubby white t-shirt, so i figured he wasnt on the bench. Also looked like he'd been chucking himself about, so i doubt he had a knock. I dont understand not playing a sub keeper. Instead we have Jamie Smith on the bench. Correct me if im wrong, but isnt he a right back. Also on the bench was Matty Game, whod played right back almost all season. So what was the need for another right back on the bench? The point of having versatile players is it frees up your options elsewhere. Still, its sods law that the one game where we dont have a sub keeper on the bench is the one we need him.

Ross did his best, but you cant blame an outfield player for letting a few goals in. He made one very good stop, diving at someones feet.

Anyone know how long Mel will be out for, and when the suspension starts?

But still proberly cost points last night fella but when has a 4th choice right back ever come off the bench and earned points for your club ?

It's no disrespect to the fella but surely

Henty played right back

Mcsweeny plays right back(and in my opinion) should play there

Game has played right back in every game before last night

So why put a 4th right back on the bench instead of a keeper ?

ps Time for Mr Dobson me thinks

It didn't probably cost us 3 points last night, it DID cost us 3 points last night, but as I said before, tough luck.

Also, even though he has played every game before last night as right back I don't class Game as a right back.

I can't remember who was on the bench last night, apart from Lay and Game.

Myself and Martin were talking about this at half time on Tuesday while Billericay were winning 2-1 and i still have not changed my mind on the matter.
