No Fans, No Atmosphere, No Hope?

Staines, my bad. Still not awake.

Brighton Rebel, it's something I'll address with the club, but with the season tickets out and being sold to juniors as a bargain (Just over £1 a game), it defies the point of selling season tickets to juniors on that basis to only then turn round and start letting juniors in for £1 which is then cheaper than the season ticket.

Charlie, every little bit helps. If everyone could do that, it would make a lot of difference, especially if the Barmy Army is on song and there is a good atmosphere in the place.

I'm a firm believer that a loud atmosphere (both hostile to the opposition and supportive of STFC) will get the older children and young adults hooked and wanting to come back, hence the disappointment in the support so far this season. One of the reasons I got hooked and wanted to come back was the band from the Conference days, and whilst I don't think it's a good idea to have someone banging a drum for 90 minutes these days (lack of voices mean the drum drowns out the shouting), it did its part in creating a great atmosphere at Wexham Park.

This is an important point, but there's a way around it - just charge slightly more than the average cost of coming to a home game - £1.50 or £2 perhaps. This would still be cheaper than the current cost for a child (not sure what it is - £3.50? £4?) As long as it complies with the Ryman League rules of course.

what about sending a player to play with the junior rebels or inviting them down to train with the squad

This is a good point as well, but obviously requires one of the players to be available and willing to do this. I know we used to do this with Lloyd Owusu and Mark Fiore at Wexham Park, but that was when we were playing in Slough and able to feel more a part of the community. I'd like to think that if/when we get a home back in the borough, this will become the norm.

I think Matt's idea is good putting leaflets in all the local schools in Slough that children get in for a £1 if accompanied by an adult.

BFR I hope you are feeling better, see you Saturday

When we do the 'kids for a quid' days, they need to be well advertised in the local papers, and also at the supermarkets (sorry Warren), as that's where most people are on the morning of a match.

Is there a paper for the colnbrook area, not including the Observer and Express ?

If there is, we need to start advertising in there as well to bring those people to games for when (if) we move. Get them hooked now.

I also liked the idea of having a specialised Marketing Manager to organise this professionally.

anyway, that's my two pennies worth for the time being.

It's a great idea, but who on earth is going to fund this persons wages? As much as you can put forward a commission only wage, who would want that for a job?

I think Matts idea is good leaflets in local schools, children admitted for a £1 as long as they bring an adult.

BFR I hope you are feeling better see you Saturday and Warren I have your twirly thing.

I was at the Leyton game and I was disapointed about the number of fans that were there, but I put that down to the fact that a lot of people were still on holiday. I hope to attend more games this year than I did last year, and I will be dragging my American friend Mike down with me, as he has already stated that he would like to attend some football matches with me. I would like to attend more matches but with my fiance living the other side of Newbury, the only time I get to see her is at weekends, I also spend some weekends working at Didcot Railway Centre, and some of the remaining weekends I like to chill out, but that my be changing shortly, as she has asked for a tranfer to the Slough Tescos so be warned.

I like to add my voice to the Barmy Army and have come away from several matches with a sore throat from shouting encouragement and sinning too much, Mike also likes to sing and shout encouragement.

COME ON YOU REBELS

In fairness to the club, with the lack of personnel and money it's very difficult to have constant advertising and promotion of games to attract more fans. The posters advertising the next 3 homes games that you see around the ground, have been distributed around Slough in various shops and business premises. It would be a fantastic idea to employ a full-time sales/marketing manager but it's just not possible to pay them what they'd expect. The idea of letting juniors/kids in for a cheaper rate is the best way to go, as they are the future. But we do need us fans to be pro-active and help display fixture posters, spreading the word and bringing (or begging?) family and friends to attend games. Also as you will see in the matchday programme, there is a lack of advertising, another area that needs to be addressed. With the amount of big and small businesses in and around Slough, the programme should have plenty of advertising and also around the ground advertising boards.

Am more than willing to try to promote the club in the school- when i had the posters up Walsall- Yeading i managed to get 10-15 down, and if there is some sort of flyer and/or incentive im sure i can get more, am more than happy to try and arrange an assembly if Ediie/some of the boys want to come down. and as for a CRAP start to season we have 3 points more than i had predicted we would by this point. its not great- but hey its a start.

you shouldnt rely on one person to lead the singing, others were doing a good job while bfr was away, so we need them to step up more

Thankyou on behalf of myself and Radders! Agreed we shouldnt all be waiting for BFR to open his gob, before anyone sings/joins in. And i totally agree with Liam's point that some epopel just dont want to- But it has been very quiet this year- even though attendences are down - at some point esp when behind i was waiting to hear tumbleweed in the distance.

First things first is to get people through the gate paying their money. The more people in the ground the better, and then we can work on the atmosphere within the ground. Anyone up for a match standing down the side under the cover??

I've had a kind offer from someone to film occasional matches, so I'm up for starting things off down the side under the covering if needs be.

Lots of good ideas in this thread.

Firstly, in respect of admission price deals that is a matter for the club. We need someone to approach Roy and Bernard and get their approval and support. Then I am sure the trust will be more than happy to provide promotional support ie forking out for leaflets etc.

Secondly in respect of practical suggestions that can easily be done - just get on with it. I am thinking here about persuading friends etc to come to games.

In respect of other ideas the main thing seems to be posters, leaflets and other forms of advertising. What I would suggest is seriously considering how many posters you can get displayed and how many leaflets you personally are prepared to go and hand out. Once we have a figure we can get this costed and put it to the trust board for approval. We can then target a series of matches - say all the home games in October. If you want to coordinate that through me fine.

As for the atmosphere it needs to improve. I say we should stick behind the goal. The goal is after all where we want the ball to end up.

BTW Gary I agree with you entirely - this season has been a disappointment in terms of attendance and atmosphere and we as supporters should be trying our best to improve both. If this thread helps it will be well worth it.
