The matchday programme

AFF

Recommended Posts

I am sick and tired of all the whingers and the whiners who come on here whinging and whining about the quality of the matchday programme [Ryman League, Premier Division, Programme of the Season 1993/4/5/6/7/8/9, 2000/01/02], and who never volunteer to assist the small but perfectly formed Committee what co-ordinate it.

Without any intention to criticise, I happened to notice one or two minor, shall we say, 'errors' on the results page in the middle of the thing on Tuesday; errors which, in fairness, anyone could have made; errors which may well have gone un-noticed by the majority of the readership; errors which are most unlikely to affect the outcome of the prestigeous Programme Of The Season, 2002/3 competition this year, but errors nonetheless.

How can I assist? Would it help if I were to highlight these minor errors in order for corrections to be made for the next one? In which medium? Please respond, Hertsblue.

If several hundred other people have volunteered to help in this respect, please ignore this message.

I'd like to say that I think the programme is extremely well presented, and the boys at Queensway are doing a fantastic job.

It's just the rubbish they are asked to put in it that's the problem....

1. Verbal Diorhhea from the managers

2. A captain's page that isn't warranted - how about a different player interview each week instead??

3. How about a decent, non-biased (or excuse-making) match report for each game??

4. The Supporters Club page needs beefing up a bit. How about a different "Supporter Profile" each issue?? Funny stories from the terraces, that sort of thing.

5. How about a section each week on a past season at St Albans. One week there could be a page about the 1992/93 season, the next about 1969/70, the week after that 1998/99 and so on..

6. Plenty more ideas where these have come from.

Like I say, the programme looks very good, but content-wise it is dull, and there seems no point in buying it from one week to the next.

Over to you...

Plenty of great ideas there, and I believe the idea of interviewing of a different player (or club personality, or perhaps ex-club or other sporting personality) a week is something being actively looked at - it's something I want to do anyway. But, cutting to the chase, which ones will you be doing for the programme from here on in? I'm not having a go, really, but, as I've said before, the forum's a good place for thoughts on the programme to be aired but it goes without saying that the club can only actually go there if some of those happy to point out the faults in the publication are prepared to contribute to it on a regular basis.

Hi Herts Blue.

I'll take it from your response that the correction of the minor errors on the centre spread is in hand then.

Hi C.Z.

A decent non-biased match report eh? That knocks out the local hacks then. What about those chaps who write the reports on the web-site. Webbo would probably sell them to the Club for £1000 a piece. He gets the copyright with the £1500 per match that he pays them, I hear. Jolly good they are, too. None of this stats and facts stuff. Art.

One more thing. This isn't the right thread but I can't resist a comment about Phil Gray and Chelmsford. Did it occur to anyone else that they have been "Itchened"?

Hi Rob.

I heard from someone who had heard from someone that it's a done deal. However, my source wasn't clear whether Lee has signed a Pre-Contract Agreement or "committed his future to The Saints".

Mind you, you know what rumours are like. I always ignore them. Deny everything unless they've got it on film, that what my Grandad used to say.

Jolly helpful of the Finance Director [OOoooooooooHH] of Chelmsford City to clear up the slight misunderstanding that 7 day approaches can't be made for contracted players. Perhaps he could help out with the answer to the age-old question " How many pages in a Pre-Contract Agreement?".

Who do these people think we are?

WHAT!

Someone on here [and I know full well who it was] said that ours was Ryman Premier League Programme Of The Year, 2001/02.

Perhaps there are different area awards and we won the "Ryman Premier League Programme Of The Year, Hertfordshire" Award. Perhaps the award is sponsored by Queensway. That would explain why ours nudged it over Hitchin and Woood.

We should be told.

Mr Zeal, you're entitled to your view, and it's important you and others say what you feel. And no, I'm not advocating a fanzine (as a mere contributor, I have no say anyway), though to be honest I don't think a programme where supporters made ad hoc contributions would be a bad idea. All I'm saying is that there are only a few people writing for it. If more came on board, them we could develop what's in it. And I know it must hurt, AFF, but it was indeed voted best programme but those independent programme people (you'll crucify me for not being more specific) and 7th in non-league in general I believe. Extra value cheaper prgramme tonight as well I believe!!!

Please accept my humble apologies Mr Taylor. It seems I have developed a touch of paranoia over the years!! (Probably something to do with the booze!!)

If there's one downside to Internet Message Boards, it's that you cannot always tell the tone of voice, or the manner that certain things are meant in, leading to a case of crossed wires!!

Hi Herts Blue.

It certainly doesn't hurt me that it was voted Programme of the Season 2000/01. It would be a strange world if we all agreed that the first half against Hayes saw some of our best football of the season, for example. A very strange world.

If you re-read the thread, my comment was in response to Woody suggesting that Bedford's programme was PotS 00/01. Yaa-boo sucks to him then!

Thanks for clearing up the misunderstanding. What was the prize, by the way? Whereabouts in The Trophy Room is it kept?

Hi md.

Which of CZ's messages are you supporting? The one suggesting that there is room for modest improvement in the programme or the one suggesting that it's not for fans to contribute? Just curious.

I wasn't suggesting it AFF old mate. It's printed on the front cover of their programme.
