WINDSOR SLOUGH MERGER.

I'm sure it is pure coincidence that these merger rumours only crop up when there is nothing much else to report in the local papers. Any suggestion that this is a scam to increase circulation is a disgaceful libel and certainly did not originate with me.

Allegedly.

More seriously, there is no East Berkshire 'identity' to build on. The demographics of Slough and Windsor are radically different and Slough has only even been part of Berkshire since the Seventies. Whilst the majority of Slough and Windsor fans are reasonable people, there is enough of a hardcore in both groups to ensure that a merger would be very uncomfortable.

Short term, the only answer is for both clubs to rub along and work together whenever possible. Long term, and this is a note for the Slough fans, the answer is to start campaigning and voting against the Council members who oppose a new stadium in Slough (400 votes can make a big difference in local elections). Force the major parties to make statements of policy on the subject.

Get a new stadium and we can all get back to our preferred situation of (fairly) friendly cross-river rivalry.

THIS DEBATE HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LOCAL PRESS AND WAS STARTED BY MYSELF TO ENTERTAIN AND PROVOKE THOUGHT AMONG FOOTBALL FANS IN EAST BERKS.

I AM AMAZED IF NOT SURPRISED BY THE RESPONSE OF FANS ON THIS SITE (THIS THREAD HAS ALSO BEEN STARTED ON THE SLOUGH MESSAGE BOARD) WHO SEEM TO DISMISS THIS SUGGESTION WITHOUT EVEN A SECONDS THOUGHT.

FROM A SLOUGH PERSPECTIVE (A MUCH MORE MEASURED RESPONSE) THERE FANS WANT TO SEE THE CLUB PLAYING CONFERENCE FOOTBALL IN A SUITABLE NEW HOME. A MERGER WITH WINDSOR IS ONE WAY THEY COULD ACHIEVE THIS.

FROM THE RESPONSES OF MOST WINDSOR FANS, THERE SEEMS TO BE NOTHING POSITIVE IN THIS DISCUSSION. WINDSOR HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING FOR SUPPORT FOR WELL OVER TEN YEARS NOW AND VARIOUS SCHMEMES FOR NEW STANDS, TRAINING PITCHES AND SPONSORSHIP HAVE BEEN SQUANDERED BY WHAT I WOULD DESCRIBE AS THE SMALL MINDED NATURE OF THOSE CONNECTED WITH IT.

THIS AUTHOR WHO WISHES TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF ABUSE FOR EVEN SUGGESTING A MERGER, WISHES TO SEE NOTHING MORE THAN THE BEST QUALITY OF LOCAL FOOTBALL OPEN TO ALL. IF WINDSOR FANS ARE HAPPY PLAYING AT THEIR CURRENT STANDARD THEN FAIR ENOUGH. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE CLUB PLAYING CONFERENCE AND IN TIME EVEN LEAGUE FOOTBALL, HOW ABOUT AN APPEARANCE IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE FA CUP ONCE IN A WHILE? A MERGER MAY OR MAY NOT MAKE THOSE THINGS MORE LIKELY, BUT IT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND NOT DISMISSED OUT OF HAND.

MAY I POINT OUT TO SOME WINDSOR SUPPORTERS THAT UNDER THE CURRENT GROUND-SHARE, SLOUGH FANS HAVE DONE MUCH TO SPRUCE UP STAG MEADOW, WHICH HAVING VISITED MANY NON LEAGUE GROUNDS MYSELF HAS BEEN AN EYE-SORE. MORE COULD HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED AND QUICKER HAD THE SUPPORTERS WORKED TOGETHER.

I FEEL ITS TIME FOR A SERIOUS DEBATE ON THIS AND PEOPLE SHOULD THINK WITH THEIR HEAD FOR ONCE!

With respect, Golden Lion, I tried to make some objective comments on the arguments you put forward as to the benefits, and I think that you too need to think a little bit about what you have suggested and whether it has the support to get off the ground, or that the benefits you suggested are real.

We live in a world where we need to take people with us if we want to carry out any course of action, and if a significant number do not want to agree with you, for a whole myriad of reasons, some logical at one end but some from deep felt emotion for "their" club, then it is unlikely to be successful, however many logical reasons for doing it.

It seems clear at the outset that without any glimmerings of interest from the people who hold the ultimate purse strings, the idea is dead on its feet anyway. It would need their wholehearted support and campaigning to get fans support to even be a starter and Mr Deaner for one, is much more interested in a development of a new ground back in Slough, given the money he has ploughed in for so far no return. It is not in his interest to support a merger at this time. And Slough fans too are keen on the idea of a totally brand new stadium with great facilities for higher level football. Would you be suggesting a merger the other way round if we get it?

This is about the art of the possible, and so I suggest to you that the environment is no where near right in terms of owner support, fan support or public support to even be a starter at this stage.

This looks like a serious debate to me. It's just that no-one agrees with you.

There is no such thing as East Berks football fans.

I AM AMAZED IF NOT SURPRISED BY THE RESPONSE OF FANS ON THIS SITE (THIS THREAD HAS ALSO BEEN STARTED ON THE SLOUGH MESSAGE BOARD) WHO SEEM TO DISMISS THIS SUGGESTION WITHOUT EVEN A SECONDS THOUGHT.

Most fans have thought about and discussed this issue many times before. Therefore they are not acting without a seconds thought.

FROM A SLOUGH PERSPECTIVE (A MUCH MORE MEASURED RESPONSE) THERE FANS WANT TO SEE THE CLUB PLAYING CONFERENCE FOOTBALL IN A SUITABLE NEW HOME. A MERGER WITH WINDSOR IS ONE WAY THEY COULD ACHIEVE THIS.

STFC's financial backers want a new home that they can leverage other real estate development onto for profit. Stag Meadow is not suitable.

How do you know what the response of 'most Windsor fans' is? WEFC attract a similar percentage of residents as most non-league teams in the area. New development is only prudent if it can be funded in a sustainable way.

THIS AUTHOR WHO WISHES TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF ABUSE FOR EVEN SUGGESTING A MERGER, WISHES TO SEE NOTHING MORE THAN THE BEST QUALITY OF LOCAL FOOTBALL OPEN TO ALL. And where would the money have come from?

I FEEL ITS TIME FOR A SERIOUS DEBATE ON THIS AND PEOPLE SHOULD THINK WITH THEIR HEAD FOR ONCE!

There is nothing wrong with debate providing the debators can accept views contrary to their own with good grace.

LEGOLAND WINDSOR used to have an adertising board up at wexham park and none at Stag Meadow. Has the penny dropped?

Pehaps STFC should merge with Legoland then. We could call the new team Legs Eleven.

Yes, the penny has dropped. In fact several thousand pennies in all probability.

Legoland took a look at the average home gate at Windsor and at Slough, and - sentimental, loyal philanthropists that they are - decided to advertise in Slough. This is why Halifax Building Society advertise on TV rather than in the local paper.

(reproduced with permission from "Marketing for the Hard of Thinking" by Plato, 386 BC)

What is your point?

That Windsor should merge with Chelsea?

until this post was put on the message board both sets of fans were perfectly happy with two clubs and the rivalry between the two would prevent the decision of a merger.the rivalry is good for both sets of fans

we have to remember that if it did occur ,that one of the two managers would lose his job and numerous players would have no where to play as a 20 man windsor squad and a 20 man slough squad would give 20 players two many than what is needed in the ryman league. There would also be the debate as to how many players from both sides would play. For instance,a slough fan would want the majority of the team made up of slough players whereas a windsor fan would want more windsor players in the team

as much as i respect the thoughts of THE GOLDON LION, i think that we must face the facts, and this means that a merger could not take place.Almost all posts on here point out the many problems that there are concerning a merger and although there may be some positives as pointed out by both sides, there are many negatives as well.

i love watching nonleague football and i like the fact that there are many clubs in the local area to watch. We have to remember that there are many higher league clubs in this area and to get as many fans as windsor and slough get is an achievement anyway. There are many people everyweek that would rather watch windsor or slough than chelsea ,reading or QPR and this is good for nonleague football.

from what i have read, both sets of fans seam to be agreed that a merger is not the way forward.

we have to remember that there are many clubs in this area and the fact that slough and windsor are supported theway they are shows the sort of support around here.everyweek slough and windsor fans choose to watch these clubs instead of chelsea, reading,or QPR.

we must also remember that one of the two managers would lose their job as well as many backroom staff.many players would also be got rid of,as a 20 man windsor squad and a 20 man slough squad would not make a 20 man ryman squad.somewhere along the line 20 or so players would lose out and this would be unfair. There would also be the problem of how many players from both sides would be in the team. For instance, a windsor fan would want more windsor players in the squad and a slough fan would want more slough players in the team.

we can also realise from the posts on this subject of a merger that there are many negatives and few positives.i'm sure that both windsor and slough fans can agree that the chance of a merger is just as likely as england winning the world cup under sven goran eriksson.

Why would Legoland want a ad board at Windsor. Its only 1/2 a mile down the road, you would have to be a bit stupid to not know about Legoland if your at Stag Meadow. From a marketing point of view it would be completely pointless!

Going back to the original topic would the Golden Lion (who I guess might be a Wall fan) be happy if Millwall merged with say Crystal Palace?? I'm not too sure the people of Bermondsey and Croydon would be too happy following Millwall Palace or Crystal Wall or South East London & Croydon Eagle Walls.

What would mr cake propose for the development of football in the Windsor area? Not much. He's probably indoors on the net pretending to arrange a "meet"! Trip to chelmsford anyone?

Mr Cake doesn't have any proposals for the development of football in the local area as Mr Cake doesn't see a problem and thinks the local teams are all doing just fine!!

The only "Meet" Mr Cake is organising is with Dr Fosters & Sir Becks tomorrow in Cardiff when England continue our quest to be world champions at every sport by 2028. (excluding the girly American sports like Baseball & Basketball)
