The New Club Bar

Recommended Posts

I notice in the thread responding to Andy’s plea for people to use the new bar that 1 or 2 people have picked up on the staffing issue – the time it takes to get served can really be an issue in deciding whether people go in or not. I don’t bother trying at half time any more, for instance.

For many I know my next points will be irrelevant, but if you can please a sizeable minority without upsetting the majority, you will increase your numbers:

1. The beer. bigdrink.gif Not everybody is a pint of lager / bottle of ‘Bud’ geezer. If you’re into decent bitter, ‘John Smith’s Smooth’ is probably about last on your list of preferred tipples. The Plough prominently advertises its current real ales on a blackboard (is this up every day, or just on match days?) & has been very well supported at the last couple of games. Personally, I go into The Rose for a couple of pints of the real stuff, on the way to the ground, before a token half of Guinness in the Club Bar (if I can get served.)

2. Now that we have a revamped bar with new cellar space, could we not try a small quantity of real ale & see how it goes? As an experiment we could get a couple of minipins from a real ale wholesaler (there’s one in Bentley Street, I believe) and see how it goes, with some decent visual & tannoyed advertising. I for one would then go straight to the ground rather than making a little detour at the top of the hill. If it doesn’t sell, no great loss, if we haven’t bought in barrel loads of the stuff (which you can’t do anyway because it goes off if it’s not drunk.)

3. The smoke . smokin.gif It’s better now the place is bigger, but it can still be pretty bad & will only get worse blah.gif when it gets colder & the doors have to be shut. Any chance of a no smoking zone down the far end of the ‘hall’ section?

Just a thought – if there’s no interest from anyone else, I’m obviously just one of a dying breed of non smoking real ale farties & I’ll happily go back to contemplating my sandals (what I can see of them beneath my beer belly) scratching my beard & polishing my glasses whilst awaiting extinction.

I understand all your concerns BTS, maybe someone will reply in an official capacity ?

However, the thing with real ale, as I understand it, is it takes a lot more looking after than your lager ( or Strongbow for that matter !) and needs to be turned around fairly quickly ? I don't know what sort of volume of punters attend the bar on non match days, but would assume that the volume of real ale that would be consumed would not meet the required sales ? I maybe wrong !

Cheers,

Not official, but when we got Sheppard Neame as sponsors I enquired about getting Spitfire. The problem was that the volume wasn't high enough and that most would have to be thrown. But it must be worth persuing other avenues.

I agree about a non-smoking area!

A minipin holds 17-18 pints so it might well be worth a trial to see if the hassle of handling real ale is worthwhile.I for one would forego a pre-match pint in the Plough to help out the experiment and might even try to fight my through to the bar at half time ( the sacrifices people are prepared to make to help the club!).

I find a smoky atmosphere unpleasant as well.

If the club were to try a mini/polypin of the real stuff I would certainly sample a flagon or two. By the way, I know that the Flagship Brewery in Chatham Dockyard sell their ales in Polypins racked bright and ready to serve and will last at least a week.

Thanks for the support on the beer idea: nice not to get an 'I'm all right Jack' style of response from the non bitter drinkers.

Re. the smoke drifting through. In the old bar, I'd have agreed, but since the re-vamp the place is pretty big. If we had decent extractor fans & a no smoking area down the bottom end, I'm sure it would be a huge improvement. Wetherspoons have no smoking areas within a large well-ventilated space, where smoking is allowed elsewhere (but not at the bar itself) and it works pretty well.

Well said Wobbly - Always nice to have something to nibbble on, especially when in the vicinity of dancing girls.

And even if I say it myself, my fondant fancies are exceedingly nice cakes!

Nice shout regarding the TV in the bar, when will it return, and will it have SKY sports. ( Might get a few staying around a bit later, and spending a few extra quid , especially with the live SKY games, kicking off at 5:30 )

I think you've all missed the point here. We are trying to pull in more punters to the Fleet, and get increased finances for Andy to strengthen the team.

In my experience , dancing bears and custard pies is a formula that normally works, and it keeps the crowds coming back for more.

Its a just a thought, and may stop Andy keep having to walk the tightrope where the budget is concerned.

Well COCO and Wobbly, I think that I may have stumbled across a compromise to this dilema.

How about Dancing girls dancing bare, and instead of cakes and pies the club lays on some tarts instead.

I am sure that everyone will be happy with this compromise and that our takings in the bar will rise.

In my experience, It will be more than the takings that will rise.

Any news on the TV making a re-appearance..

Big screens at either end of the hall would be ideal..

PS. I am sure I saw a couple of fondant fancies making there way onto the buffet table after the game. Real Ale , fondant fancies , sounds like its time to bring on the dancing girls... ( Just as long as they keep out the way of the TV screens)
