Missioners convert last-minute chance (27.08.05)

UNITED are still looking for their first win of the season, after suffering the agony of a 90th-minute defeat away to Hayes this afternoon (Saturday).

In a tight first half, chances came and went at either end, but the game remained deadlocked at the break.

That all changed on 57 minutes, when a sweeping move down the right found Stuart Goodall in the box, who fired the Missioners ahead from close range.

United's troubles deepened when Rob Traynor was dismissed following a clash.

New signing John Bacon looked to have rescued a point for the Magpies when he met a free-kick and steered it home to level the scores on 86 minutes.

However, Hayes substitute Charlie Hill dashed those hopes with a swerving dipping shot in the last minute of normal time.

Damn.Shame.That.

And before someone asks its Maidenhead! You may giggle at this too...

‘We must work our socks off’ says boss

WITH just three matches gone of the new season, the Magpies are already faced with the task of rebuilding their confidence.

On Saturday, against a very strong Cambridge City team, Maidenhead United were crushed 5-0 in front of their own fans in what, on paper at least, looks like a thrashing.

Manager Dennis Greene was less than impressed with the final outcome, but thought his side performed well for 40 minutes.

He said: “I suppose it looks like a thrashing, and I suppose the second half probably was.

“However, we matched them for 40 minutes and were doing well, especially as they are one of the promotion favourites and we are one of the relegation favourites.

“But we let in two late, sloppy goals before half-time, although I thought their second goal was off-side.

“During the break we spoke about getting back into the contest, and shorty after the re-start Robert Traynor had a one-on-one with the keeper.

“But he didn’t score, and when Cambridge bagged their third, that was that.”

He added: “When the third goal went in, I think some of our guys let their heads down.

“To be honest, after that Cambridge could have scored any number.”

But it was the lack of commitment which most annoyed the Magpies boss.

He said: “The manner of the defeat was unacceptable. We stopped working and we must never do that.

“Cambridge have now won by three, four and five goals because they keep up their levels for 90 minutes.

“So far we’re doing it for 40 minutes.

“Whatever happens, we must carry on working our socks off.”

In an effort to find the right combination, and bring some energy to the squad, Greene is looking to sign three new players this week.

He said: “I’m sure I’ll have two by tonight (Thursday) and hopefully one more tomorrow.

“However, this doesn’t mean an increase in the squad size as we don’t have the money. Players in means players out.”

Greene is hoping the new faces will kick-start proceedings ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) clash at Hayes.

Greene commented: “We can go to Hayes and get a win.

“I’m optimistic about that. But we have to work hard.

“I hope the new blood will give some of the players a kick in the pants.

“I’m looking for a good reaction which I’m sure I’ll get.”

On Bank Holiday Monday, the Magpies entertain Thurrock, who have also not had the best of starts to the season.

Greene said: “The problem with this time of the season is that it’s too early to tell how it will all pan out.

“Wait until about 10-15 matches in, then the picture will be clearer.”

(I think we all know how it will pan out Greenie!)

If Greene's results don't pick up would have thought he's be out soon. Going by what happened to Dreyer after a slightly better start last season and was sacked I think Dennis may be struggling...

Maybe they will then bring in Tony Choules - who they probably should have brought in the first place...

Think we'll struggle against Hampton tomorrow, but think we might be able to sneak something against Braintree after some of the reports I've read. Think getting Ballard into the side and also Mason and Harris playing regularly will see an upturn in our fortunes.

I don't wont to rain on your parade but they have one point, we have one point and i cant see when we will get our next.

Lookign at the prediction league Rog, i was very pessamistic compared to most Rebels having us at 15th (i think) but i cant see us going down for one second. I expect at least a point tomorrow, Redbridge and Margate next month should be another 6..... East Thurrock a draw i would expect too..... Cheer up Rog or Dom will give you a big sloppy kiss <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Oh!And we( Slough )are doing well are we-talk about blinkered.Having seen our 3 games I think we will be relegated as well-good or even semi good sides have a decent defence-we ain't got one sorry! Wasn't it Brian Clough

who said if they don't score then we can't lose.

I have always thought the more you utter the bigger idiot you sound lol!!!

Get a grip Opti! 3 games in and we are missing 3 players from our starting 11 and havent exactly played bad. If you havent got anything constructive to say and would rather moan about the team behind an alias then just get lost. I for one are fed up with your remarks.

Could not agree more Tom. Opti the ultimate broken record. We will improve but our next two matches are very tough.

Keith- he must be pissing you off though- the article with him in the express where he basically said you'd get relegated isnt the kind of thing to spur a team on is it?

Of course he is. Haven't seen the article though. I just happen to think he's as out of his depth at this level as the club appear to be at the moment.
