Urgent - PC Again

Ok, go for Dell, because the Apple Mac looks like a fisher price toy and people in the real world use PCs, people who use apple macs are either designers/music mixers/completly up their own a*se, they over use such words as 'contemporary', 'visionary' and 'aspirational'.

Go for the dell fella!

Think I may have upset some Mac users.

Actually Acer are not bad either, but what Dell do well is the after service package, I got the 3 year deal and needed a new screen, that would have been about £5-600 if I hadn't, I think they're ok, but Toshiba/Sony and Acer are all decent enough too.

I'd like to hear CANV's views on the matte of Mac vs. Dell (etc).

Also, Laz, Rob et al, tried those ideas, they didn't work. Downloaded something which copied iPod files from the iPod back to the PC, so it's fixed as far as it can be...

i macs cost twice as much so are therefore better..
they look much cooler as well which is equally important..
they dont break as much , they are easier to use, even i can manage the foto, dvd and music stuff .. on them..
natch i paid the top for a machine that is twenty times what i would ever need but once i got used to the differences its much better..
its like comparing your old p.c to a telly..
one you start, open, frick around , move stuff, wait, etc etc ..
the other you switch on, put it on the channel u want n thats it

GHA, what do you actually want to use this new PC/Mac for?

Unless you're doing something in art/design or music, it really has no value over a PC.

On your problem, have you checked the hard drive for amount of memory used? Check My Computer > C Drive, which should indicate memory useage. Music files usually take up serious memory, so the running speed would have improved if those files were no longer on system. Equally if you have duplicated a lot of files that will become apparent quickly enough!

Do a 'Search' for all files, and specify the date you did the account user deletion.

I've just 'cleaned up' a computer for a mate who somehow had ammassed four account users. Copied all relevant files to My Doc' before deleting a/c users. No problem at all.

Other possibility is to do a system restore to the day before you did the deletion.

SteveP - internet, e-mails, uni stuff, not too much design, although some music. Spoke to a chap at work who re-iterated the 'paying for the higher quality' idea, and agreed about smoothness and running capabilities.

On the problem - gonna try the 'administrator account' idea, searching for the files has not worked...

I would definitely reccommend Dell. My home PC is a Dell and runs really well. Have had no problems whatsoever.

Ok instead of being opinionaated about it, I'll try to be even handed.

The Mac is good, very easy to use but you pay a lot for it.

The PC is cheap any may not have the longevity of a Mac, but when you're paying half the price you are getting some value.

To be honest since XP has been smoothed out, word, excel, the media player are all fine standalone programs and very easy to use. It has been made a great deal more user friendly.

Consider the fact that when you are studying or working, the Uni is likely to have PCs, that when you get your first job they will have PCs. If you need to do something work related you'll be far better off with a Dell or PC than a Mac.

I own a dell, my work PC is a dell, all my friends own dells, most of my family do too. To be fair none of us have had any major problems, except me and dell solved it pretty quickly.

I guess it's just a case of the fact everyone else has got one so it's a bit more convenient. The Mac has it's merits too but for me I don't think they're good enough to justify paying more for a less compatible computer.

right, a couple of things that want checking..

If you have outlook express are e-mails still coming in?

Need to see if the POP account is working. If not then it's a connection issue.

If this is a break from normal, ie this has been used loads of times before, I would recommend rolling back the settings.

You could re-install the internet providers CD, that may get it working again.

Do a line check to ensure that all is well on that front.

I would do that first and if it's not playing ball erm....
