Defoe leading the charge of English stars at the Lane

Recommended Posts

There are few words to sum up how good a footballer Jermain Defoe is, and will become.

Excuse my enthusiasm and overlook my optimism if you so desire, but the young Tottenham striker has got the potential to be the finest forward in world football.

Players like Defoe come along once every ten years. Spurs fans are well aware that they have got a special talent in their side. And soon the world will know, too.

I wrote once upon a time that Defoe will become the new Gary Lineker for club and country. Any reason to change that opinion, now?

Well not really, to be honest. He has started this season in top form and looks as though he could well score in every game.

Of course he won’t. But what he will do is bag more than 20 league goals this season. Guaranteed. Everyone is getting worked up about this new Tottenham side under the masterful control of the brilliant Martin Jol.

And rightly so. Spurs will claim a top six spot this season unless they become too self-aware and nervous. But they won’t do that. The great gift of young players is their ability to just go for things and not worry about the environment in which they are playing or the expectations on them.

Tottenham’s young guns will be able to just keep their heads down and focussed on their season and that will be enough to keep them in the healthy end of the league table.

But after that, Defoe should be joined by a number of other Tottenham players in Sven Goran Eriksson’s World Cup thoughts.

For me, Defoe would lead the line alongside Wayne Rooney in Germany. He should have been there at the European Championships in Portugal 2004 but for Sven’s blindness when it comes to new, fresh talent.

If you compare him with Michael Owen, as you must in this context, then Defoe has got everything Owen has - and with the addition of the pace which the Real Madrid man once used to blistering affect.

For the good of the national team, the best players should always play - not the biggest names.

It’s a sad state of affairs when someone like Defoe could potentially top the scoring charts in the Premiership, fire Tottenham to Europe and still not make it into England’s starting line-up for the World Cup.

That says plenty more about Eriksson’s policy of selection than it does for the brilliance of Defoe.

I think there will be a couple of other players from White Hart Lane worthy of inclusion at the World Cup at the end of the season.

Of course, Paul Robinson is superb and is the automatic number one for his country. But Michael Dawson is also an impressive prospect and by the end of the season could well be a considerable distance further up the pecking order for selection in defence. Ledley King will come back to fitness and pick up where he left off.

And Michael Carrick shouldn’t be ruled out as a real possible starter in the holding midfield role come the end of this season.

He can only learn from playing and training with someone like Edgar Davids and that guile and craft is something England desperately need to sit and protect the back four.

Nicky Butt held the role at the last World Cup and earned plaudit’s the world over. There is absolutely no reason why Carrick can’t do the same next summer.

These must be great times to be a Spurs supporter. There’s no doubt they are one of the teams to watch this season. And their handful of young English stars are the key to further progression in the months ahead.

Good article gertcha, must of taken you a while to write.

I agree with all of it, there are some quality up and coming english youngsters, let's not forget the likes of Huddlestone and Routledge as well.

And Gardener is a full international and has been at the heart of both clean sheets so far <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, so did I, Spurs are really onto something this season. Cheers for talking me into getting a membership mate. It was a great move. I well enjoy our trips down the Lane.

Obviously considering my routes, I'll never stop supporting United, but this is the best way for me to get to watch decent footie when I fancy it.

Unfortunately, if things carry on going well, you'll be stuck on a waiting list.

We've sold all our season tickets this season, for the first time ever, I think.

I'm kicking myself for not getting a second one now in Dylan's name, and just offloading the spare to you or SteveP etc. each week until he's old enough.

Actually - that's a good point. I'm going to get him on the waiting list today. It could be 5,000 long by the end of the season if we do well.

Must be great to have a supporter of another premiership team there knowing that every goal for and against the Spurs may have an bearing on his real true love, he stands up and cheers the goal but deep down he knows that may have a negative bearing on his boys!

I also enjoy my trips to the lane with such wonderful company but my trips are a bit less frequent as I watch my first team and choose not to be as fickle as you two!

That would be Kanaoute, first touch as predicted by yourself, he came off the bench due to not being good enough for the starting line up and playing a shocker the previous week.

Who scored in the 1-0 win at Newcastle BTW and was he any good in your eye?

Looking forward to the Fulham game let's hope for a repeat result
