Second Loan Signing Agreed

Obviously good to strengthen up front as Wesy aside, we're lacking any back up for Hodges and Seedel. Given where he is coming from, I doubt he will want to be sat on the bench so it will be interesting to see where he fits into Eddie's plans. After his goal on Saturday I'm sure the last thing we want to see if Hodgey filling in at Centre Back while Ballard is suspended

Seems he was quite good...

Tuesday November 6th

Gunner Brooks

Rumours that Jamie Brooks is going to sign for Arsenal have been denied by Firoz Kassam (Oxford Chairman), who says that he has spoken about Brooks informally with Arsene Wenger but that no bid has been received. The rumour states that Brooks will sign for Arsenal for £2.4 million, of which £1.4 million will be a downpayment and the rest will be received after certain conditions have been met, such as number of appearances etc. Brooks will also stay at Oxford for the remainder of this season.

However unlikely this all seems it cannot be denied that, if true, this would be an excellent deal for all concerned (except Arsenal, perhaps!) with United receiving a large cash sum to boost the current campaign and still get to keep the club's leading scorer and most promising prospect. The denials from United are more vehement than would be expected if there was more than a grain of truth in the rumour, which leads us to believe that it is perhaps wishful thinking, although we would be happy if it turned out to be true.

Also found this when doing a google search on Brooks!

United get Saulsbury

This rumour has since been rubbished as a wind-up!

Oxford United are about to sign centre back James Saulsbury from local Rymans League Division One team Thame United, apparently for a fee of £50,000. The twenty year old defender formerly played for Marlow and Cheshunt and completed a soccer scholarship in America last year. He allegedly refused to sign for Premiership side Newcastle United last season because he didn't want to leave Oxfordshire. Saulsbury has already passed his medical and could be signed on Friday in time for the trip to Hartlepool. His addition to the squad is presumably to cover for the loss of Guyett, Hatswell and Bolland who are all suspended for the York game the following weekend.

Oh and for those of you who don't know him - he's the RIGHT BACK(!) <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> at Hayes at the moment

Back to the formation Eddie used in the Bryco Cup final and against Worthing i'm guessing. Still think defence, rather than attack is our big problem - especially with Ballard out. Matt Murphy's loss aside I think we have stregthened attack and midfield more than last season, but still think we miss Saulsbury's awareness and Murph 1's pace...

My feeling is that we will play 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 and have Hodgey as the third centre back with the new guy up front with Seedel. The month long loan will tie in nicely with the remainder of Ballard's suspension. Would be a shame because Hodgey had a storming first half Saturday.

Thought we were playing more of a 4-4-2 on Saturday and Lovegrove isn't going to be anywhere near as aerially dominant as Avery, Daly or Ballard. Wasn't Lovegrove on the bench on Saturday then? Thought the tactics for Saturday in terms of personnel chosen and line up were spot on.

With the new loan signing, one of Hodgey or Seedel has got to go, so moving Hodgey to the back is Eddie's only option.

I think Eddie sees potential in Lovegrove but presently, in this standard of football, he probably sees him as being a bit lightweight.

I think Ballards suspension was for 5 games. This would make him available for selection w/c 5th Sept. The new loan signing would still have 2/3 weeks left with us.

Assuming everyone is fit and available this could lead to a selection headache (although some say a nice one) for Eddie, with Mason, Metcalf, Harris, Alexis, Woodruff, Wilko and Sheppard fighting it out for a midfield place. Then he would have the problem of moving Hodgey back into the forward line (and providing the new boy shines)leaving out Seedel.
