whilst their first team had smallsy to thank for keeping the scoreline down, what could have happened to the first team happened to the reserves...

Essex and Herts Reserve League

Burnham Ramblers Reserves 1 - 11 Leyton "Reserves"

The long awaited start of the season really was a baptism of fire in every sense of the word. Leyton arrived with 9 first team players (Ryman Premier) and they looked every bit the consummate first team squad. With old friends like former Heybridge Swifts and Hornchurch full timer Andy Tomlinson in the squad we knew we were in for a battle. In total respect for the Ramblers squad, they were totally up for the game and showed no signs of nerves. It took Leyton 15 minutes to open the scoring, and they hit three in quick succession. Ramblers, for the best part of the half, took the game to Leyton and showed no respect as they battled for every ball and challenged with every ounce of strength causing several good chances. Andy Scott-Douglas won everything in the air and gave the much taller Leyton defence plenty to contend with, the Ramblers midfield 5 battled tirelessly against their much taller and experienced counterparts. The 3-0 scoreline to Leyton at half-time, I thought was flattering (as did the ref).

The second half was a different matter, Leyton were much more focused and were determined to stamp their authority on the game. They were much more fit and experienced, and pushed Ramblers back with their overall strength. Ramblers took advantage of some show boating in the Leyton penalty area and Scott-Douglas fired home from 20 yards, which really rattled Leyton and woke them up. In fairness, Ramblers kept pushing and working the ball, but a combination of lack of match fitness and a changed squad led to their demise. It must be said that Ramblers had several chances and gave Leyton a run for their money, although the score suggests otherwise.

At full time their manager made a point of telling us that we should not be disheartened as we played a near full first team.

As a summary, I know Ramblers got more out of the game than Leyton did in terms of learning experience and being able to benchmark our play against the best in non-league football. We will move on from this and look forward to the visit of East Thurrock on Tuesday.

Players: If you want to see who played have a look at Leyton's site where you will recognise many of the players are in the pre-season picture gallery especially against Cambridge City.

Not really. You can kind of say you were plucky losers but doesn't mask the fact you were plain crap!!!
