Just a thought (don't read if you are bored of admission charge discussion)

I didn't see too many 'freeloaders' on Saturday, unless you count the people who arrive at 1:30 and work for an hour and a half helping to raise money and get the game on; some of those even have season tickets as well y'know.

Out of the 311 I would estimate 280 were paying customers, either on the day or upfront.

Yes, I do count those people, of course!

Are the people who stand in the town centre with a tin, raising money for Barnardos or selling poppies exempt from donating cash to the good cause themselves??

Hi Zeal - looking forward to Wednesday night? Our boys scored a couple of crackers on Saturday. I just hope we manage to get more that the embarassing (just uner) 17,000 people there.

Back on topic - I know what you mean, but St Albans City Football Club is not a charity, and I would expect that people would get paid for WORKING, unless it's explicitly states that it's a voluntary role. Even then 9 pounds for 3.5 hours work is not much is it? I'm thinking from 1.30pm-5pm here - but i know that people put it extra time here and there. Just out of interest how does the DJ job work - "free" entry? Are you taking requests?

I understand that, but these aren't just workers that have applied for jobs seen in the paper.

These are some of the most 'loyal' supporters of the club, who are supposed to be working for the good of the club.

How can you raise money for the club by doing a 'tombola' or whatever on the one hand, then take it straight back with the other by not paying to get in?

Think you'll win on Wednesday, for what it's worth. Remember - Blackburn are my dark horses this season!

An interesting view Zag. Different to mine, however.

Just out of idle curiousity, just how many hours 'work' would you feel entitled a paid mercenary to free entry to t'Park on matchdays? If such arrangments are in place, do you feel that fans who do pay to get in to the ground should be made aware of the roles of those who don't? Pay. It could be a little embarrassing if, for example, I applauded the sterling efforts of a person who I considered to be a volunteer when, in reality, that person was enjoying free entry in payment for his/her services.

Oh, by the way. For the avoidance of doubt, I choose to purchase a season-ticket for Clarence Park, although I am entitled to a press pass.

Ther have been times in the past few seasons when the idea of being ejected has seemed attractive but only if I would be given my money back on the way out.

Sorry, Zag. Only just spotted this question.

No - I've never been told that the DJ job is free entry. I'll leave you to decide whether former DJ's have paid to get in for yourself, mind.

At the same time, I have never been asked to produce a ticket when DJ-ing, which kind of illustrates my point. And no, I haven't paid, because if I can get away with not paying, I will do so.

I accept my attitude is wrong, but there are dozens of people who 'work' for the club with the same attitude, and it's going unnoticed week-in, week-out.

There is one big clique-y gang down there who all look after each other when it comes to getting in, and no-one is interested in trying to halt it.

I think if a role is formally endorsed by the club - like the recent requests for stewards (free access and 10 pounds - I think, I can't spot the article now), then that's fair enough. I'm not sure what roles we are discussing here? If we take Rob's figures as pretty accurate - there was 31 unpaying people (311 - 280) on Saturday. Does this include the opposition directors? I heard that friends of players have been known to play the free-entry card - amosy like a "guest list" thing. I don't agree with that, BTW.

If the club made the additional 60 free-loaders ......

Who exactly are all these freeloaders, 1968? Because all the people I know that work for the club on match days seem to pay their way.

Perhaps you should name them all if you are so sure of your facts or is it gross exaggeration again. Put up or shut up mate, it is getting very tiresome.

I don't know who you are Nos, but can only guess as to why you're so cagey whenever the 'free-loader' word is mentioned.

As I said in another thread yesterday, if you guys are happy to let it go on, then fine.

I'm not willing to 'name and shame' - it's been done before and got us nowhere.

No doubt you'll read into that whatever you wish. You'd be wrong.

I'm not cagey, mate. I'm just one of your average Joe supporters, who pays his entrance money every match. What I don't take kindly to is people like you coming on here trying to discredit this club with your bullsh.t, which is patently untrue and which you are not prepared to back up with hard facts.

Amen.

Forgive the intrusion into this little spat Nos but I would like to add a comment.

The question of 'freeloaders' has been raised in this board a couple of times in each of the last few seasons. On one occasion, Gibbo came on and, effectively, invited debate to cease. To this extent, its his club and that's up to him. Its his money. I have a different view and I can't be bothered to air it on here any more. You will appreciate that, when comments are made concerning the tight fiscal policy that is imposed by William Verry Ltd, however, my sympathy is similarly muted.

That's all very well concerning the various officials who have stated quite openly that they don't buy a season-ticket or pay at the turnstiles to gain admittance to the ground.

I was more concerned at suggestions made that various people who offer their services in a 'less official' manner gain free entry to the ground as a result. Suggestions have previously been made that [in previous seasons] members of the Committee of the Supporters Club, and members of their families don't pay.

I felt at the time that, if that's true and if Gibbo is quite happy about it, it's no concern of mine. I felt that the matter should be properly declared, however, at the Supporters Club AGM when people offer themselves to the members for election to the Committee.

It wasn't mentioned at the AGM in May and I assume that the practice, if ever it was one of course, has ceased.

£9 is a fair bit, even if you dropped it by a quid or two im sure more people would come. Ok maybe the club is scared they wont make the same money if they dropped the prices, but why not do it for a one off game? Like the 'kid for a quid' thingy but do it for everybody. Advertise a good few weeks before the match as wel and see what happens. You will never know unless you experiment! Oh by the way I like the amendmants in the programme
