Lost 3-1 to an efficient Billericay side who had three shots on target and scored all three. Their first came when Parking was unfairly challenged by a Billericay player as he claimed the ball. The ball fell loose and they rolled it in. The home keeper had gained a foul moments earlier for a challenge far less robust than the one on Parkin.

Hodgey scored after Woodruffe squared the ball but we fell behind again straight after half time when a simple ball over the top caught every defender flat-footed. Their player sprinted away from Avery and finished easily. The third came from a break down the right which had it been ours would have been stopped on halfway for a foul. It wasn't though, they got free and scored a relatively simple third from close range after the ball was played in and laid off for the striker.

Billericay looked fit and workmanlike but lacked flair. We looked slow, unable to hold the ball in attack or midfield and unable to create chances. In short, a bit like every game we play at that ground!

To be fair, I dont think we played badly, but were unlucky to get a number of decisions go against us - The first goal was an obvious foul on Parkin, and the ref didnt seem to see the ball touch a Billericay players hand on a number of occasions.

Still our first game and theres a long way to go.

Pre-match kick around was great too!

Good that we've got this one out of the way. Let's get on with the other 41 games now - we should bear in mind we had several debutants today and a 3-1 defeat against probable challengers for the league title shouldn't dent the team's confidence. Roll on Tuesday and a chance to put right some of the things that Eddie and Westy learnt about today.

P.S. Good to meet you Tom.

Yeah good to see you Tom, I just hope seeing Radders asleep with his mouth wide open wasn't too much for you!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Ricay obviously have a professional setup and are going to be there or there abouts come the end of the season, however even though we were out played I thought we were a tad unlucky to come away with nothing considering two of their goals came from a foul on our players.

Thought Mets was superb when he came on!

Should have known I was in for a bad day when I did my back in in the pre-match kick about! Owch!

Difficult to tell how the season will progress based on todays match. Ricay are a good side and will be there or therabouts. Started sloppily and seemed a foul on Parkin for the opener, but when Hodges equalised we played quite well until h/t.

Was a bit disappointed in the overall performance though as we failed to get the ball down and play today as we can - too much long ball stuff for my liking, especially from the back three and we seemed to bypass the midfield until Mets came on and only then we seemed to start to pass the ball, but the game was probably lost by that time.

Still think our best side can compete with anyone in this league, but the squad still needs 2-3 additions in my opinion, especially in defence, which worries me quite a bit.

i think realistically we were all expecting to lose the match today, as much as we wouldve wanted a win or draw to start the season - especially after watching them thrash us at home last season!

well done to the rebels for trying though, lets hope they take it on to the rest of the season, as matt said - roll on tuesday!

Of the debutants today, I thought Paget did well in an unexpected start, Avery looked composed but was slow for their 2nd, Alexis was in and out of the game, unfortunately more out, and Woodruffe had some good moments but looked like he hadn't had much of a pre season as he ran out of steam. Tee Daly came on and didn't look much cop and Miller (the man formerly known as White) didn't really have time to impress.

My MOTM of the match was Hodgy, although Mets was outstanding when he came on. The two let down's IMO were Shep and Wilko who didn't look as sharp as they have in pre season and didn't protect the back line as well as they could have done.

Roll on Tuesday!!!!! UP THE REBELS.

Yes was nice to meet Tom today and add another to our regular pre-match kick about oiks.... (p.s. special mention to matt cousins for scaring away some ricay fans by lumping the ball on their car as they drove in - quality)

Was also impressed by Mets and Hodges def gets MOTM, in my humble opinion...

our defence looked seriously outplayed today . Thought we had a chance of a draw in the first half but the second half was dire, we couldn't keep posession and there was hardly any balls put to our forwards. Yes there were some questionable decisions today by the ref and his linesmen but 'Ricay were more solid thna us and as Liam notes, had more crosses than us so were always going to score.

Still on the bright side some new guys got a run out (although I'd have liked to have seen Mets and Miller/White brought on a bit earlier) and 'Ricay are one of the hardest teams we're going to have to face this season... Roll on Tuesday!
