THATCHAM PULL OF A COUP - 27/09/2002

Jewson Wessex League club Thatcham Town have pulled off quite a coup with the signing of former England semi-professional international midfielder Steve Stott and he made his debut in Tuesday night’s 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Portland United.

“It was my first game of the season, and I’m a bit rusty,” aid the former Yeovil Town skipper who has seen service with a number of top non-League clubs.

“But I’m looking forward to playing here,” he added.

The 37-year-old was at Slough Town in a player-coach capacity last season after joining the club from Woking.

Before that he skippered Yeovil and only left the club when it turned full-time and the Witney-based accountant wanted to move closer to home.

Stott's (pictured) career started with Tranmere Rovers before he spent nine years with Southern League Bromsgrove. He moved to Kettering Town for £15,000 in 1994 and then to Rushden for £30,000 before another £10,000 took him to Yeovil in 1997.

Stott played six times for the England semi-professional side, scoring against Holland

And he also skippered the famous Middlesex Wanderers touring side on a tour of India.

“You can see that he has played a different level,” said manager Neil Baker, “and in a couple of weeks when he is fully match-fit, he will be a great asset to the club with his guidance and leadership.”

That goes with things that I've heard. The more I hear about the manager, the more I'm convinced he's never going to learn.

Probably in a similar situation to Steve Hale, they probably had a disagreement and Browne's personal beliefs got in the way of the team's best interests.
