Football fans are idiots

I don't think he's having a go at non league clubs, certaintly not afc wimbledon fans, just the crap top league footie fans will put up with.

Someone took the piss out of me yesterday cos the slough season ticket is only £90, as if paying £30+ a game to watch ninety minutes of footie should be worn as a badge of honour.

Indeed.
When I lived in Liverpool in the eighties, I had a season ticket to stand on the Kop. It cost me £90. That would get me THREE seats at ONE game now.

But how many hours income did £90 represent in the eighties? You cannot compare monetary quantities from one era to another. Your £90 would have bought a house in Liverpool in the 1950's after all.

Yes, you need to take inflation into account but Horsham Rebel's point is still true.

When I started watching Watford as a kid, the entrance fee represented one seventh of the money I used to get for my paper round. If that ratio were still true today, that same paper round would be paying £105 a week which I suspect isn't the case. Well, if it is, I want to know as I'd get up and do it before going to work!

Top sides are pricing people out - which is where clubs like Slough come in.

Personally i think every one of our league games should be kids for a quid in the hope of attracting more people. My brother reckons he gets a right bargin bringing three of his kids to Slough games cos it costs him less than £20 - a bit less than the four season tickets he's got for Fulham.

But their grounds are full! Any business that lowers prices when demand is high would be crazy. It's the people that are pricing other people out. High prices are supported by demand, not supply.

Yes, the grounds are full, but mostly of people who pay the prices, and then COMPLAIN about it for most of the match and the week after, before going back for more at the next home game.

Go figure.

Oh, and I have tickets for 2 games at the World Cup in Germany next year, the price....about £25 each for good seats.

That depends on who they're trying to attract. Why are so many fans disillusioned with the game? Why do people like me, and many others with strong allegiances to professional clubs, prefer to watch our football at non-league level?

Over commercialism at the highest level, by its nature, probably wont kill clubs off but it will change the game to one that the 'ordinary' supporter doesn't want to watch and drive them to watch clubs like Slough.

Ian, they don't care who they attract, just as Tesco doesn't care who buys its cornflakes, as long as someone does.

For supporters, I dont think it is a question of choice between non-league and big league either. I watch non-league not as a substitute for expensive big league, but because my community team happens to play in the Ryman League. If I lived in Reading I might be watching Championship football, and if I lived in Sunderland maybe Premiership. If Slough reached League 2 in 10 years, would we switch to Burnham or Beaconsfield because we are 'non-league' fans? probably not.

The days of comparing big time and semi-pro football have gone forever. They are now completely different and virtually unconnected. In a few years even the rules will start to diverge with seeding and technology introduced to keep the big teams big and the small teams small. With TV and internet money from global broadcasting and merchandising, Premiership big hitters will be able to play in empty stadiums and still get richer quicker. The main customer is no longer the bloke turning up at the turnstiles at 3.00pm on Saturday, well, most 'big' games are not even played at this time anymore.

The situation is that big clubs recognised their contempt for their grass root supporters many years ago, but the supporters are still in denial. It's like being infatuated with a beautiful woman who despises you. At least people on this board are only attracted to an ugly sister who cannot afford to spurn our attention!

The grounds aren't full - only for the very top clubs, for the first time in years Newcastle struggled to sell all their season tickets, and look at how many Sunderland had last week for their first game back in the premiership.

Premiership crowds are also getting older which isn't very good for the future.

Still, as the article said - football fans are idiots.
