Jermaine Defoe to start in Denmark

Recommended Posts

SVEN-GÖRAN ERIKSSON is ready to pick Jermain Defoe for England’s next two games but the head coach did give the Tottenham Hotspur striker a warning about his workrate. The Swede believes that the 22-year-old should be offering more to the team.

“Jermain is quick and he has marvellous technique but, and I have told him this before, he needs to get more involved in games,” Eriksson said. “I sometimes have the feeling watching him that he is just waiting for a chance to score. He knows my opinion, although I don’t expect him to be perfect when he remains so young.”

Defoe will start alongside Wayne Rooney in the friendly against Denmark on Wednesday. Michael Owen is suspended for England’s first World Cup qualifying match of the season, against Wales in Cardiff on September 3, so the Real Madrid striker will make way in Copenhagen.
