Strikers - or lack of them!

Differences of opinion - Superb !

At 5:45 tomorrow some will right and some will be wrong - I'm stating the obvious I know, but its what makes football so exciting and enthralling isn't it?

My quick summary, for the record, purely based on form of new guys in friendlies and what we know about our "old hands" is :

Goalkeepers - very dodgy indeed, undersized for the Conference and will struggle on set pieces when the "heavyweights" from the other teams block them off and man-handle them.

Defence - Full backs - Good at left and right back with good cover too

Centre Backs - McCarthy looks even slower than last season but it may work with him alongside the quick looking Ross Smith, the other Smith looks slow and too small for the Conference.

Midfield - Slatter looks like a good signing, full of energy and running. Saunders looks like a top Conference player still, powerful and likely to get 10 + goals again (for me our best player). Drury - great skillful player, a matchwinner but seems to have blotted his copybook with Daish. Jacko is still a superb left sided midfield player and looked very fit in the friendlies. The others are ok guys but but no more (apart from Macca who once fit will still be a good leader, if a little slow).

Forwards - Manny is still a matchwinner, when fit and terrorises other teams (if you are a defender, he's the last guy you'd want to mark!). MacDonald - the verdict still open for me. Grant - we need to sign him with no other target man in the squad (looked very good second half against Charlton). But, our options up front look very limited and weak, could be our undoing.

PS Can't wait til 3.00pm tomorrow !

For most of the pre-season period, Daish has acknowledged the need to sign one or more new strikers. In fact only recently it was reported that he was looking to include no less than 5 strikers in the squad for this season.

Just 2 days before the start of the new season, so where are the new strikers?

Lets assume that the report about 5 strikers was/is correct, Macdonald and Omoyinmi would obviously be included in the 5. One other would no doubt be Grant, or if not why was he given so much time on the pitch during the recent friendlies. However he has yet to pen to paper as far as I am aware.

So what of the other 2?

Both Macdonald and Omoyinmi have recent histories of being somewhat injury prone. If both were to get injured at any time during the season, what already looks a very lightweight strike force will be non-existent.(I am not sure that the inclusion of Grant improves that situation very much if he signs either, but 3 is certainly better than 2).

The club will not be able to bring-in a loan signing (s) as a result of the closure of the transfer window and as such could well be left with no credible strike force at all.

Macdonald!
Omoyinmi!
Grant!
Sodje!
Guy!

Happy now?
