Strikers - or lack of them!

Recommended Posts

For most of the pre-season period, Daish has acknowledged the need to sign one or more new strikers. In fact only recently it was reported that he was looking to include no less than 5 strikers in the squad for this season.

Just 2 days before the start of the new season, so where are the new strikers?

Lets assume that the report about 5 strikers was/is correct, Macdonald and Omoyinmi would obviously be included in the 5. One other would no doubt be Grant, or if not why was he given so much time on the pitch during the recent friendlies. However he has yet to pen to paper as far as I am aware.

So what of the other 2?

Both Macdonald and Omoyinmi have recent histories of being somewhat injury prone. If both were to get injured at any time during the season, what already looks a very lightweight strike force will be non-existent.(I am not sure that the inclusion of Grant improves that situation very much if he signs either, but 3 is certainly better than 2).

The club will not be able to bring-in a loan signing (s) as a result of the closure of the transfer window and as such could well be left with no credible strike force at all.

In the Messenger Daish said he was hoping to bring in a striker on loan from a premiership club. Whether or not he actually has someone lined up or is just stating what he wants I don't know.

Steer clear of Drogba, he's crap.

White Van Nistelrooy with reference to this posting then you can't have read the article on Kent Online???

http://www.kentonline.co.uk/sport/default.asp?article_id=21847&startrecord=-1.#IND

At the end of the day there are many fans happy to see that Manny is trying and scoring in pre season and Charlie is doing the same.

I would like to have a 20 plus a season goal machine but at the moment we don't have that at the club and the only people who will be able to find a striker are Liam and Alan and their backroom staff!

I hadn't seen the article on Kent Online, but what difference does that make?

Daish was aware that the lack of a regular goal scorer was a problem prior to the end of last season and highlighted the need to secure such a player himself in a number of interviews.

Why then, less than 48 hours before the start of the new season, has such a player not been signed?

The good news is mate in under 48 hours time you'll be able to walk into the bar and say to Liam "Hi I'm the guy thats been slgging you off on the forum, why haven't you signed a striker?"

Alternatively you could slag him off behind the anonimity of this message board.

Absolutely.

As 'Meatloaf' (no doubt you're much too young - unless you really are Harry in a frock - to know who I mean) once sang: "You took the words right out of my mouth."

Wait until about 4.55 on Saturday before you start making preliminary judgements. It's eminently possible to start a season having turned down players whom you could have been panicked into getting, only to pick up better ones later. This is impossible if you have half a dozen to get, but come on we have signed 9 full timers. Yes we are very light up front, but much better that than light at the back. See what happens in the next month before you think of making real assessments.

I will be happier if Grant signs but although it would be nice to find this 20 goal a season man we have survived without one in the past.

We can expect Jay and Jacko to get a few from midfield and it wouldn't be a big surprise if Jukebox was to play up front given the strength of the midfield.

I find the current goalkeeping situation much more worrying than the lack of forwards.

The difference the article makes is this quote

Others could follow with Daish in pursuit of two strikers capable of sharpening his attack.

Liam said: "I'm hoping to sign a striker on loan from a Premier League club in time to face Exeter. I'm also working on another deal for a forward."

At lease this shows Liam is trying!

And we're all failing to appreciate that perhaps Stadhart and Manny apart, Andy Ford never recruited the sort of striker WVN seems to want. Wilkins, Essandoh (other than his late-season spree in 03-04), Haworth, Pinnock, Louis Evans, Harrhy, Abbey, Budge, Boothy, Simon Parker - not one of them set the Confernece alight.

Daish's capture of MacDonald, potentially Grant and a Premiership kid on loan compares quite favourably given he's been in the job a few months. We've had a poor record in the striker market ever since Portway left, but to listen to some people you'd think Daish had invented the problem.

You will no doubt be pleased to hear that I shall be making no further comment, for the time being at least.

Over the last few weeks, as the Fleet approach what could be a make or break season, I have expressed what I and many others who know what they are talking about are feeling.

Quite frankly I will be amazed if the squad that Daish has assembled does not end up as being one of the weakest in the Conference with the club facing the inevitable consequence come next April.

I hope that I am wrong, I really do, but none of you should be surprized to see me make a reappearance on this forum at some point in the season to say "I told you so".

Personally, I've no problem with an alternative viewpoint - we are at least airing our differences of opinion in an adult manner...

Just what amazes me is the amount of stick Daish has got without a ball being kicked (as such) this season. I'd compare this squad entirely favourably with what we had after Andy Ford let Stadhart and Wilkins go two years ago (I don't recall what our immediate forward line was after that, but I imagine it was utter drivel compared to what's on offer now).

Glad to see you're not suffering from self doubt, then.

Just suppose you're wrong - will you come back on here and admit as much? Not a rhetorical question.

Will you come back on when were planning our trips to the Britania Stadium next May so we can say the very same to you? Didn't think so.

So you'll only come back on if you get proved right and we fail? That'll be goodbye forever then, close the door on your way out.
