I was at a fete a few weeks ago and bumped into Tommy. He didn't know me from Adam but I mentioned he was the last Fleet captain to lift the Southern League Southern Division shield for the club, must be nearly 15 years ago now.

For those who didn't know, he's assistant at Horsham, he's got a year left on his contract down there. He said he'd like to come and watch the Fleet but thinks people wouldn't recognise him. Yeah right! Except for the younger fans at the ground now, there are still some 'older' ones who still cling on to their faculties and remember players from old, so come on Tommy, come and see the Reds again.

If I remember correctly, he started off with us as a young player, then we did what we used to be really good at & let him go elsewhere.

 

A few seasons' later & he was the collosus at the heart of Sittinbourne's defence, for those few years when John Ryan was given silly money to spend & they were a bloody good team. During the season they got promoted to the Southern Premier, Tommy fell out of favour there & came to us, initially only on loan, but the stupid b*ggers forgot to stipulate that he couldn't play against them, which he did & duly scored (think that was your back header, Richard) in a brilliant 2-2 draw at Stonebridge Road in front of a big crowd. I was near Ryan at the time & he said as Tommy's goal went in, "You could have put money on him doing that," adding sundry curses about the Sittingbourne official who'd cocked up.

 

Think I've still got the Non League Annuual which has him on the cover playing in the FA Vase final for Hythe Town
