Heybridge 1 Billericay Town 0 (AET)

Recommended Posts

An entertaining game that deserved a better competition than the Essex Floodlight Cup. It was only ruined by the strenge and persistanly poor performance by the ref (who we have the pleasure of against Slough).

Good football was played by both teams showing a different style. Heybridge with fast front runners and going route one for most of the game and Billericay wanting to pass the ball around. Both teams went close with some good chances.

A bit gutting to lose in the last minute but it's only a game and the real action begins on 20th...

Come on you bluuuuuueeeeeeesssssss!!!

Apart from the diabolical ref, I think we should also highlight the disrespect shown by the Heybridge officials to what, after all was a Cup Final.

There is a lack of atmosphere at any ground if the tannoy system is not used but I felt it was very poor that there was no announcement of the teams and substitutions. And even at full time we stood waiting to see if there would be extra time, penalties etc. Pretty poor, particularly as Gary etc do such a good job at New Lodge (even if the speakers are a bit loud at times!!)

As for the game, thought we battled hard, and there was plenty of effort put in by most. Danny Hockton seems to be getting stronger by the game, but has anybody else noticed that this mainly left footed player seems to be favouring his right most of the time, is this a result of his previous injury.

I think Simmo was particularly good when he came on, worth a full game and seems to be a potential dead ball expert modelling himself on Beckham?

The two teams made up for any lacking in atmosphere, I thought. In fact I thought the Heybridge players deserved better support and everyone (all the players) deserve an <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" /> for a entertaining game.

Hang on, I hear a Heybridge supporter cheering.....shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

I thought Matt Game got stronger as the game went on.

Just a thought (and this isn't sour grapes) but was there a doubt of off side with their goal? Considering that the ref and the lino missed a blatent hand ball by Saps, if was I suppose you could call it justice but I'm just wondering...

Obviously disappointed with the result, but I found our performance reassuring after a couple of reffy efforts against lower opposition.

Both sides missed good chances, both keepers made good saves, and I felt both teams played well. Unfortunately it was not to be for us. I think most people believe that Heybridge will be strong this year so I think we can take plenty of positives from the game.

Thought our keeper did well again although it remains to be seen whether we can afford to keep two on the books. I think the plan was to start this season with Pat and Macca at centre half, however after yesterday I think this needs to be reconsidered. Richard Thomas is in my mind much more effective at centre half so we could have 6 defenders in Pat, Macca, Thomas, Dobson, Henty and Kerrigan/Price.

Thought Matty Game looked strong in the second half but I feel the elusive central midfield genius is still the one position that is evading us.

It's true the ref was [****!!****] but that's hardly a new phenomenen, certainly looking forward to the season now...

Got to say that most of the team played well, best performances for me were Brightley, Thomas at the back, Game, and, not mentioned by others... Kerrigan. Great to see Cousins back and playing, and Danny's fitness is getting there, the goals will come...

One of those games where it just didn't bounce right, and the ref, well, everyone (Away supporters, home supporter, the managers, I mean everybody) was laughing and/or cursing at his performance. It wouldn't be funny against Slough, though it strikes me that he could be a bit of a "home team ref" and could be swayed by a strong crowd. Went to send Justin from the bench but didn't go through with it, I doubt Justin has made a friend there!!
