How to get to Wivenhoe - By Boat

i cant believe what a debate this has brought. Eugene was a legend. he was a genuine nice guy and the smallest things upset him cos he was so nice, however he was a major geek. (sorry steph) and well known for telling the most boring and irrelevant stories or facts. at first people found him an irritance but grew to love him. i have a tear in my eye folks. better go get emotional about gareth gates's stutter to compensate.

I havbe never watched Big Brother either.

For someone to complain that I tell boring stories whereas it might be useful to know that Fairway number 1 buoy is unlit as it could save a serious accident at some time and then to suggest that not only are they familiar with Eugene but actually watch the tripe defeats me.

The only Eugene I knew about was the character on an old Nice record. And he had more appeal than big brother.

Did you ever see the play.

"Sex olympics year". If you did you may start to understand the appeal of the "reality show" and how it keeps people supine.

What about Pink Floyd's 'Careful with that axe Eugene'?

I used to work with a Eugene but he was a Scottish prop forward who fulfilled the alcoholic stereotype of both his nationality and his sport.

Come on Steph.

You were just showing off your nautical skills, with all the added jargon.Nothing wrong with that, you seem to be very knowledgable on the subject. But are you seriously suggesting that all that technical 'gumpf' was relevent to anyone.I very much doubt that anyone else on here has been in charge of a boat in their lives. The chance of any of us needing to know that the Fairway No1 buoy is unlit,is about a million to one shot.

Fair play though,I still enjoyed your account. It was a bit like listening to the shipping forecast on Radio4.Irrelevent,but Stangely comforting.

PS..One good thing has come out of it. Steph is now more famous for his boat, that he his for his ladder.

I don't think you had to actually watch Big Brother in order to know who Eugene was.Anyone who buys any daily newspaper (even broadsheet) would surely have heard of him?

I dont buy daily papers and when the radio or tv say big brother i either switch over, off or just ignore it.

Steph and his ladder will still go down in the leg-end of EFC. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bounce.gif" alt="" />

Steph and his bath tub well they'll go down in the history of ETFC. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/arrr.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/arrr.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/arrr.gif" alt="" />

LS

I must confess to the sin of pride when discussing my nautical skill as I had never sailed a boat until I was 50 and considered that sailing was way out of my league. However I feel that many people who are interested in sport can, if they wanted, turn to sailing for their pleasure.

As for knowing whether the fairway number 1 buoy is lit or unlit that is a serious matter for any sailor and, for a sailor, is far more relevant than big brother. Even for most of the population who probably know sailors it is more important to know than who Eugene is. The point I am trying to make, and I discussed it in the pub yesterday, is that we are in an age of "celebrity" manufactured by the media whereby celebrity is more interesting than knowledge.

chill out steph, neither is important. these forums are for pure drivel and we love it. it was a case of me noticing your original statement was right out of the eugene text book. i will remember about the fairway number 1 buoy not being lit the next time i sail to wivenhoe. perhaps you could start some sort of campaign to get it lit in the interest of safety??

Just thought I would join in as I have only just read this thread knowing SFA about nautical matters. Have to say that I too am one of those rare people who have NEVER watched Big Brother and i hadn't got a clue who eugine was. I am a broadsheet reader and like Tom if there was anything in there about Big Brother I skipped it. Strangely the subject of BB has not been a major topic of conversation in my office either.

I am not really interested in sailing but I was interested to read about a fellow Towner going to a game in an unusual way and found that interesting.

We had seen that Steph was going to use his boat and I was curious as to how it had gone and I still have no interest in Big brother.

Hang on a bit. He posted the report of the boat trip because Brunob asked him to. And why "Eugene" (no I don't watch BB and if I've heard his name it's gone in on ear and out the other and obviously wasn't too memorable)? Surely you should have said "Erskine"!
