How to get to Wivenhoe - By Boat

I noted in the last programme that ETFC have told fans how to get to Wivenhoe by train and car and I thought that they ought to know that you can reach it by boat.

Train from liverpool street to Burnhma and thence to Burnham Yacht Harbour to board a boat.

There is a problem. High water at Burnham is at 09:39 BST and a similar time at Wivenhoe and second high water is at 22:16. The aim has to be to get to the Wallet Spitway at around low water, 03:43 and 16:20 pm. It seems to me that waiting for 16:20 pm may be too late as another 3 hours sailing can be anticipated arriving at Wivenhoe around 19:20 only 25 minutes prior to kick off so clearly a night sail is called for.

Depart Burnham at around 01:30 should get us to the spitway (CO 065 degrees through the Whittacker channel) Past the seals which with a gibous moon setting at 03:30 am should help us to do a bit of nature watching.

Due north at 51 degrees 45 minutes north 001 degrees 7 minutes east to the Swin Spitway for around 1.5 sea miles then take the flood to the Eagle and Colne Bar bouys and up the Colne to Wivenhoe.

ETE 06:30.

Thanks for that Softie.

We intend to arrive around 2 hours before high water - and either take a mooring buoy or drop anchor. There is, I understand, a quay up river of the sailing club. Will we be able to moor bows to at around high water?

We arrived at the boat at around 6:00pm on Monday and did some boathold chores - made tea and something to eat etc you know the kind of thing.

BTW on checking lights noted that running lights were not working so hoisted a lantern to the mast. This worked well for about an hour until the battery went so hoisted main and pretended we were sailing with the tricolour lit.

Set the alarm for 00:15 hours but sheila decided to get into bed first which meant she had an uncomfortable night sleeping on my side and I didn't sleep at all so was up at 00:07.

Made tea. Took off power cables etc and slipped from the berth at 00:30am.

It was a clear night and we made good progress up the crouch until reaching Fairway number 1 bouy. Could see the Horse Shoal blinking ahead but no fairway number 1. Suddenly sheila said there it is as it passed within 2 feet of our starboard side. A quick call to Thames Coastguard. "Fairway number 1 is unlit". "Thank you for your report" but it was not broadcast on the next safety information broadcast.

Throught the Wallet and the Eagle was clear as a bell. Light beginning to spread from the east so hoist genoa and now we were sailing. Up the Colne past Brightlingsee shrouded in mist and would not like to have gone in there in these conditions as Leading lights were not visible.

Then no problems until Wivenhoe. The sailing club were most hospitable provided key to the facilities and code to the gate. Dried out on the mud and did a little scrubbing down. Went for a walk to Arlesford Quarry and round the block then met the parents at the Rose and Crown.

It is more then a mile to the ground!

Return journey was more interesting but more of that later.

Regards

LS you are normally spot on with your views but there is nothing wrong with not being up-to-date with the goings on in the Big Brother house. I have heard of Eugene but that's it. I wouldn't be able to recognise him in the street or make comments on his personality. Does that make me a lesser person?

Nope. I'd heard the name but couldn't tell you anything about him.

Coverage of BB in the Indy (not actually a bropadsheet these days, of course) has been minimal, and what there has been I have skipped. Has it been different in the right-wing publications that you get your view of the world from?
