Southport joked about putting a thousand pound bet on the town at 10/1. But what if we the supporters had a whip-round Saturday and put a bet on for the benefit of the players if we won? Anybody up for it?

Assuming those prices are arrived at asa consequence of pre season results and weight of betting, it would be worth waiting until Monday. If we drift out to, say, 16/1 than I'd be happy to engage in an each way bet. To make us fourth favourites is a nonsense at this stage, and 10/1 each way ain't going to make too much. If the rumours about wages at EFC are correct (and I was only interested in money), I'd be inclined to lump on them e/w at the moment.

What are the rules regarding "insider" football betting? As Enfield Town are a supporters-owned club, this presumably makes every supporter at least a part-owner. Does this then prohibit all of you from betting on your own club? If you did put this bet on and won it, would the FA be questioning the large influx of money into your club in twelve months time?

I think you'd have to be able to prove that all those that took part were in a position to influence the outcome. I don't think that puts ETFC in a different position to any other club.

I don't have a clue about betting (and I'm sure it shows) but I thought it only mattered if you bet against yourself and then didn't try to win. I can see that being naughty.

Not suggesting you would or wouldn't get into trouble. I asked the question because I genuinely don't know. There are rules about directly influencing the outcome of a single match but I don't know about ante-post league betting. Not sure if the FA get funny about such things.

No but the size of fan base will also have a bearing on the odds! We have a larger fan base so can expect lower odds. To some it is a mathematical science to others it is very inexact and depends on the skill of the bookie.

I always take fan base into account when making football bets. Never under estimate the power of the crowd. Just ask Laurence Batty...

But its still not a good bet. 10/1 to finish top of the pile after 42 games (a season 33% longer than anything that's gone before) at a higher level than before and against teams we know little or nothing about just isn't the right price.

 

By all means collect some bettiing tokens but use them more wisely on individual bets to accumulate a tidy sum by the end of the season. The contributors could take it in turn to make the choices, which could lead to a nice bit of competitive tension at the same time.
