Plough End latest

I'm sure Brian won't mind me copying & pasting in an email just received by those of us who signed up for updates from the Club:

NORTHFLEET END

Following further discussions with the Football Foundation regarding a grant to assist with the refurbishment of the Northfleet End, Gravesend & Northfleet FC have run into a problem with doing a full refurbishment of the Northfleet End.

To qualify for a grant the club need to have the gradient of the steps in accordance with the Guide to Safety at Football Grounds. Applying the stipulated gradient all the way up the terrace would mean those at the back part of the Stand not being able to see properly, with their heads close to the roof.

At this stage the club are therefore planning on refurbishing to halfway back the terrace and looking at options for the remainder of the terrace thereafter.

The capacity for that end will still be around 800 people and the higher steps will be under cover (the front few steps are not under the roof).

Alternatives later with the back part of the Stand are (subject to cost):

- make it a flat area and put hospitality boxes there

- replace or lift the the roof and hence have terracing all the way back or seats at the back

- leave the back part empty permanently, on the basis we are looking to move to a new ground, possibly putting in place some kind of barrier that is more pleasing to the eye than having the very back of the stand empty.

I think go with the flat area.

I have a friend in a wheelchair , and one of the reason he doesnt go football , is that he feels he is being just stuck by the touchline.

Some sort of elevated area , behind the goal may encourage him and others to go.

It will also give us an area for hospitality boxes in the future.

Than again , if we are difnately on the move shortly , just make good and but up a temp painted wall similar to what they had at highbury when they rebuilt the North Bank

Clearly something needs to be approved and done in the short term - probably better to wait to find out to what time scale the board are working to viz-a-viz the new ground.

Given that Margate are now rebuilding, so are Dartford and Maidstone, unless we come up with something ambitious we will (once again) be left behind in Kentish football and facilites.

My preference would be to either build a new stadium within say, 4 years or rebuild the Road completely, with a new Northfleet end and new Clubhouse/gym, new full length stand on the river side, push the road terrace back and up to the wall and some cover on the away end.

The latter project would clearly be the cheaper option as it could also be staged over a period of a couple of years - but is of course, subject to obtaining a decent lease.

Were people not down at the ground during the summer? If you didn't want to get dirty you could have offered your services.
