For anyone who has not heard of Leiston, it is a few miles north of Ipswich. They play in the Premier Division of the Eastern Counties League.

 

I have added a few details of their current squad - it is taken from their web site.

 

Scott PEAT (Goalkeeper) Age: 19 - Pre season acquisition from Ipswich Town Academy. Very confident keeper' comfortably in the area and great distributor.

 

Gary ROSE (Goalkeeper) Age: 21 - A fine and confident keeper and very good shot stopper.

 

Donald GEORGE (Defender) Age: 19 - CLUB CAPTAIN -Previously with Woodbridge Town. A good defender who shows great experience despite his years.

 

Karl GODDARD (Defender) Age: 32 - Strong, mobile and a fierce competitor. Very good reader and anticipator. Comfortable anywhere across the back.

 

Karl RATCLIFFE (Defender) Age: 24 - Recent signing from Stowmarket Town and an experienced Premier League defender. Great left sided defender.

 

Tim SPARKES (Defender) Age: 25 - A cool and calm presence at the back and Players Player of the Year last season. Great anticipator and strong competitor

 

Ross CHALLIS (Defender) Age: 30 - Returned to the club following a spell at Woodbridge Town. Very strong and mobile defender across the back four.

 

Chris WRIGHT (Defender) Age: 23 - Strong, willing and always gives 110% for the cause. Right footed player either at right back or in the centre.

 

Danny GEORGE (Midfield) Age: 19 - Signed from Woodbridge Town in December 2003. Very quick and skilful player comfortable in midfield or attack. Scored some useful goals last term.

 

Danny STANLEY (Midfield) Age: 27 - Played for Braintree, Maldon and was a trialist with Southend United.

 

Blake SAKER (Midfield) Age: 23 - Former Tottenham trainee he is comfortable across midfield and forever has defenders on the back foot with his surging runs.

 

Craig TAYLOR (Midfield) Age: 22 - In his fourth season with the club, home fans favourite with his box to box running causing opposition headaches. Super engine and key central midfield partner.

 

Adrian WHATLING (Midfield) Age: 31 - CLUB COACH -Formerly with Stowmarket Town. Dogged with injuries last term but a key player when fit. Very quick down either wing.

 

Glen DRIVER (Forward) - PLAYER Manager - Returned to club following a spell as manager at Ipswich Exiles.

 

Luke HAMMOND (Midfield) - Recently signed from Clacton Town .

 

Ivan FRYER (Forward) Age: 33 - Former Felixstowe, Ipswich Wanderers and Woodbridge player with a host of Suffolk caps. Very experienced playmaker and leading scorer for the club at this level.

 

Lee McGLONE (Forward) Age: 19 - Recent signing formerly with Woodbridge Town. Strong and athletic forward who looks a useful acquisition.

 

Caleb EBANKS (Forward) Age: 21 - Recent signing from Ipswich Exiles

According to the Leiston forum they have a supporters coach leaving at 11.30 on Saturday. At last, some away fans at "Fortress Bridge Avenue"!

It is pronounced LAY - STON (not LY - ston).

 

There are two teams in Leiston - the other team is called Leiston St Margarets, and they play in the border league. Anyone going to Leiston usually ends up at the wrong ground first time of asking as the St Margarets ground is alongside the road through the village and the floodlights are very prominent.

 

A couple of seasons ago, when they had only just gained senior status, they won at Hullbridge and then lost in the next round at Soham Town Rangers.

 

Don't under-estimate them, they are a very good side.

What sort of attendances do they get, Dagger?

They were promoted into the premier division and they finished in tenth place.

 

Their average gate was 158

Their lowest was 94 v King's Lynn

Their highest was 271 v Subbury.

That's not bad for that level of football. Sudbury get a fair bit of support in that league and from what I remember Lowestoft and Gorleston also get fair crowds.
