Best Spurs XI 1982-2005

Cort was quality for Wimbledon but really lost the plot when he went to Newcastle.

Injury plauged there, I think he only managed about 20 games in 2 season. Shame he's a top player.

Looks like he's starting to get back to his best at Wolves though, good value bet for top championship scorer I'd say!

Euell could do with a drop down a divison as well rather than splinters on the Charlton bench, he was another superb player

I've already admitted that Edinburgh and Austin were crap, so not sure what point you're making? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

The only crap Dons we signed were Thatcher and Perry. Sullivan was a good keeper. Leonhardsen was reasonable.

What's the gaffer got to do with it? He watches about two live football matches a season.

You finished two places above us in 1996/97, but we still won a match each against one another in the league, so no real difference.

The previous season we finished above you and beat you twice. The following season we finished above you and beat you 6-2.

And the season after that we finished five places above you, and knocked you out of two cup competitions.

Annoyed?

Not really. Had a wonderful day out at Wembley thanks!

Okay, I've had time to think about this, and I'll do my best to explain it without sounding like a "patronising [****!!****]".

I think the thing is, when people first get into something new, it seems like the 'golden age' of that particular thing.

My first City team, barring a couple of weeks under Jimmy Neighbour, was Garry Hill's team - and I would still consider that the best St Albans side I've seen.

My first ever Spurs team, that of the early 80s, is probably the best Spurs side I've ever watched.

My 'second coming' at Spurs was in 1990/91. Players like Paul Stewart, Paul Walsh, Pat Van Den Hauwe were playing at the club. To me, they were brilliant - they were "my side", but to anyone else, they can probably see how crap they are.

It is along this line of thinking, that is the only feasible reason I can think of that you rate that Wimbledon side so highly. Because to the rest of us, they were below-average players who just about maintained Premiership status for a number of years.

Kind of agree with that. I started watching games at West Ham in 1997/98 and I still really rate that team even though we came 8th and did better the following season.

I was too young to remember the team of the mid 80s, Cottee, McAvennie and co.

Although I supported Canvey for a few years my first real season when I went to most home games and started going to away games was 2000/01. I rate that team as the best Canvey side.

The point I was making was that our full backs were better than your's that is all

The gaffer was at most don's home games that season I was merely suggesting that you may want to ask for a second opinion as your in-depth knowledge of other teams full backs is deeply floored. As your criteria for top flight knowledge seems to be based on supporting a top flight team and attending games I think both our opinions are just as valid as yours. However some of your comments regarding Perry and Thatcher seem a little out of line as you were supporting and watching a crappy non-league team at the time so, by your criteria, have no knowledge of top flight football. Stick to saying the best players ever to come out of Wimbledon are people like Lenny Piper.

Premiership Records

92/93

Dons 12th

Spurs 11th

Two Draws

93/94

Dons 6th

Spurs 15th

1 Draw and a Don's win

94/95

Don's 9th

Spurs 7th

Both teams won at the other teams gounds

95/96

Don's 14th

Spurs 8th

Spurs did double

96/97

Don's 8th

Spurs 10th

Win each at home

97/98

Dons' 15th

Spurs 14th

Draw at WHL and Spurs win at Selhurst

98/99

Don's 16th

Spurs 11th

Dons home win and draw at Selhurst

99/00

Don's 18th ®

Spurs 10th

Draw and Spurs home win

Not a huge amount of difference!

A points per millions spent though would see Don's on top

You've forgotten to mention that we finished above you in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 too, though.

Pedantic? Maybe, but you can't stop making comparisons just because one of the teams was relegated.

Austin wasn't our full-back in the 1996-97 season anyway. Steve Carr would have been, and he pisses over everyone on your list!!

(Possibly Judas Campbell too - not sure when he switched from left-back to centre-back)
