Claridge Sacked

Millwall have parted company with Steve Claridge and appointed Colin Lee as their new manager.

The 39-year-old had been in charge of the Lions for only five weeks but has already been relieved of his duties.

"The board of directors believe it is in the best interests of the club that this move is made now," read a statement on the club's official website.

"[it will mean] a new manager can be appointed quickly ahead of the start of the season.

"Colin Lee will be taking over with immediate effect."

Claridge's departure caps a turbulent summer at Millwall. Chairman Jeff Burnige quit after only two months, and four key players - Darren Ward, Paul Ifill, Peter Sweeney and Danny Dichio - have been sold.

Lee revealed he had expected only to become a part-time coach at Millwall before being offered the manager's job at The Den.

Millwall announced that Claridge had been dismissed as manager after only a month in charge, with Lee - a former Wolves and Walsall manager - to take over with immediate effect.

Lee - who has yet to sign a contract with the Lions - said: "It was a decision that nobody really expected. Steve was going to ask them if I could help out with the coaching on a non-contract basis.

"I left Steve with [former chairman] Theo Paphitis and set off back to the midlands after the game with Gillingham on Tuesday.

"Steve wanted to get the permission of the board to take me on, and the meeting ended with his being dismissed.

"But I have not done anything wrong, to Steve or to anyone else. It's not in my make-up."

Claridge is said to be "deeply disappointed and shocked" after being sacked as manager of Millwall.

Although he declined to appear on air, Claridge, 39, gave his reaction to BBC Radio Five Live after learning that he would be succeeded by Lee.

Claridge was appointed by former chairman Burnige, who quit last month, but his reign lasted only 36 days.
