Prior to the short spell at Worcester, he was at Walsall (which unless I am very much mistaken is rather higher in league status than the Fleet), and was on trial at Boston United

Ah, you're dealing in facts here, oldmonkey. Surely better to slate the fella after one dodgy appearance and then blame the manager for signing 'crap' on purpose, ignoring the fact that most other Conference sides have been less busy in the transfer market than we have!

And Worcester fans seem to like him, but then they have the benefit of knowing what they're talking about rather than judging after a couple of friendlies:

I think a lot of fans on this forum are looking at our departed goalkeepers through rose tinted glasses!

They were both prone to some appalling gaffes at times, and obviously shared the same boots when it came to kicking out of the hand!Worcester fans seem to have a very high opinion of Aaron Kerr, and his attitude seems about right,so let`s keep the barbed comments off the forum until we see him with restored confidence, after his injury, and performing in the league, where we all want to see him do well.

If a good player is already playing at conference level or above why the hell would he even consider playing for us.

Christ, and I was called a doom and gloom merchant.

What a statement to make about the club you support!

Good players leave clubs of their own volition and move upwards to a club they want to play for.
Players who aren't good enough leave because their current club doesn't want them and move downwards to whoever will have them.
The only exceptions to this are the, few, players that are prepared to play in a league lower than their ability for large paychecks ie Hornchurch, Grays etc...
So go on then WVN, explain why a good player currently playing for a football league or conference club would wish to join Gravesend & Northfleet. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Slarti - you're digging yourself into a hole mate !

This is the whole point of having a charismatic and persuasive manager in charge, they convince players from other clubs of the same level to come to your club because of daft things like ambition, great team spirit a view for the future etc......

If this was not the case how would any club (apart from the rich ones) sign a player from the same league ?

If you look at other Conference clubs' comings and goings you'll be surprised to see that the majority are inter-Conference movements.

Its called "being able to negotiate" and one of the main reasons why you employ a manager and not just a coach !

Inter-conference transfers are still quality players moving to the clubs that either pay better or have a better chance of promotion and thus releasing poorer quality players that may stay in the conference with a 'lesser' club.

It is still good players moving up and players who are not good enough moving down.

Our best chance of unearthing a diamond remains signing someone from a lower league or growing our own from the pase boys.

"The Truth" so all inter-conference transfers involve only better players moving higher level clubs do they ?

You're talking garbage man.

Buy the "Non League Paper" once in a while, you will see all the transfers listed and you will notice players moving in all directions within the league.

And believe me they move for all sorts of reasons, personal, geographic, falling out with current manager .. the list goes on.

Also, I've no problem with signing one or two "chancy" guys from lower leagues if they look promising like Hatch and Drury for example but not a teamful of them. You need a nice blend of players, but with a backbone of known Conference level performers.

Agreed, but surely those that Daish retained were known Conference level performers and those he let go - the goalkeepers apart - weren't (we can argue the toss over Essandoh, and Gledhill was going anyway). He's then taken on a couple of promising youngsters, and with Bowry and maybe Grant a couple of old heads that might not set the Conference alight but have played at the highest level and on paper are far better than anyone we could've hoped to have signed a while ago.

I'm not burying my head in the sand and thinking Daish is some kind of god, but if he sorts the goalkeeping out, his only real problem is the striker position - and MacDonald and Manny aren't a bad option as it is.

Go on the ConfGuide pages, say here:
http://www.confguide.com/transfers.do?club=stev&start=2004-04

or here: http://www.confguide.com/transfers.do?club=stev&start=2004-04

and I don't see masses of Conference players being signed. The odd promising League youngster, yes, but many other teams in the same boat we are. Trying to improve on whatever budget they have, and whatever our points of view, the proof of the pudding is only going to be in the eating... and that's in August.
