New off-side rule

Recommended Posts

That is actually not much of a change.

We had this argument last season after Tamworth away.

A player can be an offside position but not be offside.

It is whether the player interferes with play or not.

Example A:

Player stands offside, another player shoots, hits the post, ball falls to player who was originally offside who shoots and scores. Goal should be disallowed as player benefits from standing in an offside position and therefore interferes with play.

Example B:

Player stands offside, teammates on the attack but defenders get back and attempt to clear the ball, but play it straight to the player who was originally in an offside position. He shoots and scores. Goal should stand as he received the ball from the opposition attempting to play the ball forward (i.e. the moment of being offside has come and gone although the player is still standing the same place).

We had two goals wrongly disallowed under example b, in my opinion.

It's only my interpretation and available to be shot down;

the argument will no doubt run and run during this coming season, but FIFA haven't really altered anything, only tried to clarify the situation.

Interestingly, the FA have opted out from this part of the new guidelines, according to the BBC.

Linesmen not raising their flags until the offside player has touched the ball seems to be in conflict with the fact that, under the new guidelines, players will still be offside if they are obstructing the view of opposition players (especially the goalkeeper, of course), even if they don't touch the ball.

Not according to the "Clarification from the FA which says:

"Gaining an advantage by being in that position:

PLAYING A BALL that rebounds off a post or the crossbar having been in an offside position.

PLAYING A BALL that rebounds off an opponent having been in an offside position."

I think that second statement says that the officials got it right. (Sadly)

Nooooo.....I recall reading those very words on the FA website after getting home from the match. I didn't think that it rebounded off the opponent for either goal. The defence attempted to play the ball away, but barely got it away from their penalty area. The ball didn't go to the 'offside player' but a teammate. For the next attacking play, defenders were back & by the time the 'originally offside' player received the ball, he was no longer offside.

Both times when the ball was put in the net, we were pegged back for the original offside position, even though subsequent play meant that the player was no longer offside?

I can see these arguments are going to run & run - should be an 'interesting' season!
