The trouble with goalkeepers........

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I come in here for a bit of a laugh and for something to say and sometimes to wind other people up and I will also admit I get wound up myself a bit and the rush into making a post and make a complete twat of myself when I realise what I have done.

One such incident happened the other night when I returned home from the Colchester match, I rushed home to post something about our new goalkeeper and it wasn't very nice. I don't think it was really bad but it just wasn't very nice so I appologise to the guy for those fatal errors.

Inbetween making these posts, and hearing the info I received tonight, I have said we should perhaps give the guy another chance seeing how it was his first game and they were two leagues above us.

It turns out that that the reason why the goalkeeper played so badly on Tuesday was because he was sick. He'd been on his sick bed all day and dragged himself out to put on our shirt and yet all we could do is slag the guy off.

When we see premiership players not taking pride in the shirt off their backs and taking the money we have a laugh and if we're fans of these clubs we moan about them devaluing the shirt, but when someone is sick but still wants to turn out for your club you have to admit that is something to be commended.

He was throwing up all day apparently and may have even been sick in the goal mouth but still took pride in wearing our shirt.

I can only hope the guy doesn't read this message board because I shall imagine he has been sick a few times since if he has been. When I see our goalkeeper next I shall ask him does he read this board and did he read the post's in question, if he replies yes then I shall tell him my name and appologise. I can only hope that you lot will do the same.

So there you have it, thats the trouble with goalkeepers. They're a strange bunch, lonely even you might say. Stand at the back all on their own, if they make a mistake it leads to a goal and some of them even want to play when they're sick.

Certinely puts Pullens childish little strop into perspective doesn't it?

I await your appologies!

Harry

As fans we can only judge a player on what we see. I don't feel anyone has said anything un-warrented based on the "teams" performance the other night. I'm sure Liam Daish has probably used a few "stronger" words than many of us on here to describe it!

However, if, the keeper was as ill as you say perhaps he shouldn't have been playing in the first place? Having said that, he certainly deserves another chance under the circumstances - there are plenty more pre-season friendlies left for him to do the business. Good luck to him.

If he has seen any of my comments made on any of these threads, then I can assure you I won't be apologising.

From what I have seen he is not 'up' to the standard required for the Conference.

If he is signed as the first choice goalkeeper for next season then you can expect a season of mistakes very much like those made on Tuesday night. They were fundamental goalkeeping errors.

There you go again Harry, you make a big thing about apologising for shooting your mouth of when not aware of the facts but then you ruin it by finishing with....

If you don't know what went on, and clearly you don't, then why comment?

Posting this after Harry's comments about the illness, you really are an idiot, aren't you? If he'd played with two broken legs you'd probably still criticize him for being an inadequate 'keeper.

No I am not an idiot!

If he was ill, and I mean if, then clearly he should not have been playing.

It still does not take away the fact that either goalkeeper that played on Tuesday night looked poor and will without doubt be weak links if they end up as being first choice goalkeepers next season.

I am sorry if you don't like my opinion.........but bloody tough!

So it'd be fair to describe a 'keeper as 'poor' even if he were ill (as Harry alleges)?

No.

The fact that he wants it., ie a contract with the Fleet, does not mean that he is either up to it, or that he may be the best option.

If Kerr and Treacy are the best replacements that Daish can find then heaven help us!

Have you seen the guy play when he is fit and well?

No I have not seen him play when he is fit and well. But you can only judge on what you have seen.

He did 'okay' against Folkestone. If he plays tonight, I guess he will do 'okay' against Basingstoke and probably will do 'okay' against Lymington on Saturday. But the truth of the matter is he won't be tested.

He was tested against Colchester, very much like he would be in a competitive Conference league match and he did far from okay.

He did not command his penalty area like a goalkeeper should, he missed more crosses than he went for, he did not even appear to be able to kick the ball from hand. If he was genuinely ill, he should not have been playing, however you could put some of the above down to that, nevertheless his overall performance during that first 45 minutes should give all supporters that were at Stonebridge Road on Tuesday evening "cause for concern"

By the time he faces the next real test, it will probably be against Charlton, or worst still against Exeter City. By then it will be too late.

Oh dear.

I know exactly why Pullen left but have been silenced and am not allowed to say anything.
