Billericay 1-1 Cambridge Utd

Another good workout I thought... Problem position seems to be left back at the mo as Marlon Patterson played there tonight... Not his natural role.

Thought we had the better of the first half, but with marlon and george playing down our left there were big gaps there for them to exploit. Mel gave away a pen when we failed to clear a corner on our left, but their striker had a mare with the spot kick. We probably had the better of the half, couple of good moves. Ross had a shot palmed over.

2nd half Ross missed a good opportunity soon after the break. They then made a load of substitutions and took the lead. We started to get a bit scrappy but a late goal from George Lay, prodding home at the second attempt after a good run from Nathan gave us a share of the spoils which was probably a fair result.

Well Cambridge Cit...damn!!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> United came out meaning to make a game of it. None of your "lets be kind to the team lower than us in the leagues and relax and play pretty, pretty passing football" last night. This was a full blooded contact sport.

I would agree with Simon. It was a good work out for the boys. Ross certainly looked sharp and did all the difficult things well...but the simple tap in...Then again, it is easy to say standing in the terraces. Timing is everything. Nathan was proving to be a handful.

We did look very weak on the left of defence (no disrespect to Marlon - played out of position he did his best but it was a learning curve for him) and this did expose George Lay in the first half as he tracked back more than those on the bench liked. In the second half he showed those of us standing in the "Cow Shed" a taste of what he could do when freed up.

One issue did worry me which was the smallness of the squad on show last night. I did ask Justin about this last night and he confirmed that some players (Cuz and Dormer) have small niggley injuries. Ben Price was mentioned (broken foot). I believe we're looking for at least two players to come on board for the season.

I thought we performed ok, but some players were missing a bit of sharpness which will come in the next few weeks. I agree about the size of the squad. We let Forbes, Armstrong, Trott, Kerrigan and Gallagher go, but have only replaced them with Lay and Thomas. I think we probably need 3 more players for a good size squad.

Lay was outstanding in the second half. What happened to all the trialists, I assume they will get a chance in some of the away friendlies.

I thought we played well in patches and Lay certainly upped his game big style in the second half. With the players at our disposal I can't understand why we didnt stick Henty at left back with Marlon ahead of him and Matty Game at right back with George in front of him. In my view that would have left us much better balanced both in defence and midfield. The size of the squad is a bit of a worry but remember we have Dorms, Cuzz and Ben Price to come back in and I believe we were going to give the young centre back Dobson another go but he had a knock as well. Another good workout, see everyone at Burnham on Saturday.
